Didn't realize how addicting casting my own bullets would be. Looking at buying another mold for my 1911. Now just having a hard time deciding. Really like my Mihec MP 9mm mold, so been looking at his 200gr. SWC or his RCBS Cowboy mold 225gr Solid./200gr. HP. Would have liked to have gotten his other 200gr. HP mold, but none seem to be available. Not sure that I need another 45 mold, as I have a Lyman 452374 225gr. RN mold already and that functions well in my 1911, and is very accurate for the steel plates I am shooting. Just something about that 200gr SWC that has me intrigued. Am I crazy?

Aww, been looking towards casting for a while now, what stops me is the fact that I have no idea where to find alloy locally and online prices kind of don't make much sense...

the H&G 68 style will be one of my first molds

I've been using 200 gr SWCs in the 1911 since forever. Started out with the Lyman #452460 and went to the H&G #68 in the 1970s. Don't shoot them so much anymore but always liked the H&Gs--very accurate and with 7.0 gr. Unique they slapped steel very authoritatively. Before the arrival of decent JHP loads I figured that was the most potent 1911 load around.

Had a brief fling with a SIG 220 some years back, but we didn't get along very well. I might have tried harder to like the gun, but it refused to feed the #68s and that was a deal breaker for me.

Been casting for about 50 years now so yes, it's probably addictive.

I have been casting my own bullets since I was 12 years old(soon to be 55) I enjoy it immensely! When I acquire a firearm of a different caliber a mould or two are always ordered even before loading dies. I have been lucky in that the only alloy I've had to buy is linotype from a local newspaper at 35 cents per pound. I have a few factory projectiles around here but not many. Mostly stuff acquired in trades. I shoot my own cast 99 % of the time. Enjoy.......and yes it is addictive.

back when I thought that if you didn't load your gun from the front of the barrel that it wasn't a real gun, wouldn't of been caught shooting manufactured balls, had to shoot balls of your own making, but now I kinda enjoy open a box and pulling shinny copper bullets out to load with, ya and I even enjoy loading my guns from the rear,

It's far easier to cast bullets with a good mold and then sell or loan it out than to pay big $$$ for a puny amount of jsp or fmj ammo when you don't need it.

I got in on a deal for the NOE wfn-hp gc mold a while back and it's the best one for 357mag i have used in my smith's.

I don't cast but a buddy of mine love too. I get him lead, he gives me bullets. :)

Had a little time today so I cast #15 of the mp-200gr hp's.

The mp-#68 clone is had to beat also, these things flat out shoot. The solid point & hp versions.

Any of the Mihec 200gr 45acp molds are hard to beat, excellent quality, excellent designs & excellent results @ the range.

Forrest r, those are the two molds that I was trying to decide on. Really like the rounded 200gr. HP mold, but there were a couple big factors: he doesn't have any in-stock, and there are no GB going for the mold, also the Cramer style mold is about $50 more. I placed an ordered direct through Mihec's website for the HG#68 mold. Have a set of Lee Mold handles coming in from NatchezSS, should have them around the same time. Better starting working on some loads with the commercially cast 200gr SWC. Loaded up a test batch of 5.0grs of W231, with COAL of 1.250, taper crimped to .471.

what bullet was the 3.8 gr bullseye - last picture???
oh yeah - I see tests that measure the group - center to center - so you can roll in the caliper a little bit more:D

great pictures -thanks - inspiring

just FYI - 4.4 gr WST is another good 200 grain LSWC load

I use the H&G 68 mold for all my 45 shooting. Bought it in 1979 and still going strong. I stArted with the 7gr Unique load, then changed to Winchester Ball powder for the same 'major' equivalence - ball powder worked better through my Dillon progressive.

Well for powder I have: Unique, W231, Bullseye, 2400, then a selection of rifle powder: Benchmark, Reloader 15, W748, BLC-2, 4227, 4198, 4895. Haven't tried Bullseye before, will have to break the seal.

The mp molds will come up for sale from time to time on the cast boolit website. These molds are hot & don't last long. When I 1st decided to give the Mihec molds a try I was a little hesitant, a lot of $$$$. But after using them & seeing what they can produce along with excellent results at the range, I quickly decided they are worth every penny. The other thing I decided was that if I'm going to spend that kind of $$$ on a mold I might as well get all the bells & whistles to go with it (go big or go home).

So I ended up selling all of my other molds & have bought nothing but mp molds with the cramer pin sets in them. I have/own 7 mp molds now & have 2 more on order & it wouldn't bother me in the least to buy a couple more if the opportunity presents itself.

Novalty, the 2 45acp molds your looking at are imho the best molds mp has made for that caliber, you should own/buy both. 1 for target work (hg 68 clone) & the other for fun. What 9mm mold do you have of his? I'm in on the 125gr with all the pins gb right now (6th rerun). Been looking at that mold for awhile, it should be a good lite hp bullet for the 38/357 along with a real accurate, hard hitting stinger for a 9mm target pistol (pic below).

That target was shot with those mp 68 clones pictured above. I was just starting to do test loads for a ro that I had picked up. Bought the 1911 & did a 2000 round breakin period with it working on the bbl, slide/frame fit & a couple of other areas of the pistol. After everything was right & tight I wanted to start working on a target load for it so I loaded up some test loads of the old tried & true bullseye/hg 68 combo & did test loads of 3.6gr, 3.8gr & 4.0gr. Wasn't expecting much from the 1st outing for target loads so I pulled up a chair to a table, rolled up a piece of cardboard & put a towel over it for a rest & started shooting. 15 minutes later the party was over, been loading 3.8gr of bullseye ever since for the sp version of the mp 68 clone & 4.0gr for the 185gr hp version.

I use nothing more than rage scrap/hill pickins to cast those bullets with along with making my own lube. I like to use (Ben's red), it's an excellent lube that leaves a beautiful star pattern on the crown of the bbl & is soft enough to make a good gasket seal for the bullet. What my 1911 bbl looks like after a 200 round range session with the mp 68 clone/bullseye/ben' red combo & 1 clean tight dry patch ran thru it.

I just wish they had these molds 30 years ago when I 1st started casting. Even back then I didn't mind spending the $$$ of a quality mold. The 1st mold I ever bought was a 6 cavity h&g #50 wc for the 38spl.

A couple of weeks ago a friend offered me a Lyman furnace for free. I have gathered about 100 pounds of lead since and I'm waiting for my mould to arrive in the mail. My brother in-law gave me a Lyman 450 sizer and waiting for the sizer and top punch in the mail also. I'm not sure if it is an addiction yet, but I am for sure anxious!!

At whatever point you are in casting, once you start producing good quality bullets, you are officially addicted. Just the satisfaction of realizing that the laws of supply & demand no longer apply to bullets, and the ablity to tailor your bullets to your specific needs. Control is good. They can be frustrating in the beginning, but that soon gives way to a deep seated level of self-satisfaction. You'll recognize this point when you get there, you'll go frantic searching for more & more interesting molds.

Forrest r, I will probably keep my open for future GB's on the 452-200 HP design. I didn't feel that I needed the H&G 68 clone mold with the HP pins, but will probably get the other with them. The 9mm mold that I have is the one you are on for a GB. It is a 359-125 cramer style mold with round & penta pins. I had ordered with the regular HP pins & the blank pins, but he sent both HP pins.
