A couple of days ago, at 1pm, someone tried to steal my 5'x10' utility trailer.. My wife and I were home..
A man came to the front door asking if I had seen his "missing " dog..A tad unusual, but not uncommon..
My wife heard a noise out back, but nothing that raised her concern..
A few minutes later , she looked out back and saw the trailer somewhat out of it's normal place..
To back up a tad, I keep the trailer on a concrete slab by my garden..I had it jacked up, tires off the ground, with jack stands in the rear and a piece of a I beam under the tongue..A stranded wire, rubber coated cable with a padlock that goes thru a wheel and attached to the trailer..
The dip weed at the front door had a person kick the trailer off the I beam, the cable kept the trailer immobile , so he just made off with the trailer jacks..Away they went..
To their dismay, a person I know was driving by and recognized one of them...Police were called and the police were aware of the pair and were currently looking for them for stealing a truck earlier in the morning..
That pair was lucky, I didn't see them doing their dirty deed..Lead poising would have been their just reward..
They are still on the loose..
I have since tried to be more aware of my daytime security and have beefed up my trailer locks...May have to take off one wheel just to insure the trailer doesn't go bye bye..:(

A few weeks ago I pulled into my driveway at the end of a long day and found the space by the garage normally occupied by my utility trailer was empty. Typical weekday. Typical doper thieves.

Welcome to modern America. People roaming the streets and alleys all day and all night looking for anything they can steal and turn into a line or two of dope.

I want to move back to America. If anybody hears a rumor about where they hid it at please let me know. Everybody can save boxes for me because when I move back I'm taking my stuff with me.

I agree. There was a time in Texas, at least in the area's outside the metropolitan area's that we didn't lock houses, sheds or vehicles. We could even leave town for a few days and come home with everything in it's place. Those days are gone. Economy, immigration, a total lack of a conscience, who knows. If you find that America let us all know, I wouldn't mind living around most of the folks here on the forum.

Glad at least they didn't get the trailer. Maybe taking a tire off, or both tires off would be the smart thing. The thieves around here don't even care if they have tongue locks on them or not they just back up to them and chain them to their hitch and away they go. We have lots of trailer thefts around where I live.

On the funny side of my incident, the responding local PD patrolman was a former Marine, who had been on assignment with the DEA..He was aware of the thieves And was looking for them for the stealing of a truck..
He asked me if I wanted a "boobie trap" and laughed..I asked him if it was hooked up to a claymore ? he said no a flash bang type..We both laughed, I don't know if he was serious or not..If I see him again, I will take him up on his offer..:D

At my last house, someone stole 4 of my solar powered garden lights.

The worst part...one a day over 4 days.

Really?

Quad runner Theft

A friend of mine had a quad runner sitting on a trailer in his driveway, about 40 feet from the street in a suburban area. At around 930 AM (nobody home) Thieves showed up, cut the locks and chains with bolt cutters, hitched the trailer to their vehicle and made off with trailer and quad runner. Thieves and property never found.

I mentioned in the other thread, the one time you let your guard down is when you get hit. Old neighborhood I tossed my tools in the back of my truck and sure enough they pried the cap window open and took them. New neighborhood I left my doors unlocked one night and they took a small bag of gear from under the seat.

Wife sent me a link to a news story where an 18 year old boy was molested by someone at the local park we go to often and said thats why she worried when just one of us goes out with the kids.
She understands more and more why I carry.

Trailer thefts run in cycles here but we did catch a couple of morons with a bait trailer. Thefts went down for a while but we've had a little uptick in activity recently.

My experience is consistent with what Lobo posted. Most residential burlaries and thefts occur, not at night, but during the daytime when, at least traditionally, most people are at work. Nightime is for business burglaries. Doper/burglar/thieves are always, always looking for targets of opportunity. Drug habits never take a day off.

as joe ^^^ states, to bad some of us don't live closer to each other, i also would enjoy a few fingers w/ most of the members here. up early every morning, a group breakfast, i'm sure the topics would be endless. was just telling someone yesterday, when we were kids, never had a key to any house we lived in, it was never locked. but Pa. also has changed. some parts of the pittsburgh area are like the rest of the country.

sorry, lobo

the America we knew with family, work ethic, respect, discipline, has evolved into, self centered ego, shiftless government hand out recipients. gangs have become the "family" of many children. society's creed is live for today...if it feels good do it...

the sad truth is..........the America we knew and loved aint coming back......

Did anybody else go check on their trailer after reading this? I hope the jack stands they stole fail on them.

With my luck a moderator would show up and ban me.

You will need something with greater than warp speed!

That's funny, same thing happened to me! Turned out to be my neighbor's young Lab. Had a pile of items from people's yards outside its dog house.
They replaced my lights, btw.

I hate those punks that just think that it's okay to steal other peoples stuff.

That's why we got a video system, I just have to remind myself to put it on recording.

Once they lay their hands on things that don't belong to them they need a slap in the face!

The trailer jacks they stole were not expensive in the first place and 10 years old..I doubt I could have sold them on Craigs List for 5 bucks for the pair..I bought a pair of better ones at Tractor Supply, 30 bucks for the pair..I'll lock them up with a chain today..What a hassle...:(

It was stolen from us just like those jack stands. It's up to us to take it back. There's no one else left to do it but a bunch of old guys and a few attractive women here.

They stole my neighbor's trailer with a couple snowmobiles on it a couple years ago in broad daylight. Nobody was around to see them take it and never was recovered. We live in the country in a pretty good area but theft is up nowadays. They just caught a pair of druggies from the big city coming here and breaking into homes during the day when people are at work. Seems they caught them red handed and they confessed to the other B&Es.
No surveillance system here yet but do have a monitored alarm we keep set. One attempted break in before we bought the house but the siren scared him off and only damage was a kicked in garage service door.

I live a 1/4 mile off the road; you cannot see the road from my house. A few years ago I had a 20’ boat and trailer for sale so I displayed it on the side of the road in a little pull off area. Knowing that things disappear I took the SS prop off the out drive. I also locked the trailer ball coupler shut and wove the safety chains around the coupler assembly & padlocked it to make it totally unusable. Being I had a couple 3' lengths of good heavy chain available I ran 1 each through the wheel on each side and around the frame of the trailer and padlocked them.

I got lucky, boat sold in a week and I had no problem, a fellow a mile down the road selling a utility trailer had his disappear in the middle of the night.

I use a Master hitch lock and remove all the lug nuts from the wheels. It will be enough to slow them down, but they can't outrun a bullet.

I like the idea of taking all but one of the lugnuts off...Hitch locks are a good idea, I considered one, but it has been known for a thief using a truck to chain up to the trailer or small RV and just drag it away..
Then there is the use of a tow truck that can hook up and away they go..
I have mine secured, with heavy duty chains thru the wheels , jack stands and on the trailer frame..Not gonna stop a dedicated thief, but it should slow them down enough to draw attention..
I hope I have learned my lesson, I am back on alert status..My Wife used to think I was just acting Paranoid, not so much now..:D
