First time ever I get a bogus $436.72 charge on my credit card.

Talk with two nice gals: Melanie and Heather.

Mel (we're close now) says I'll give you to Heather.

My heart is pounding.

Heather breaths heavily and tells me the fraud is protected and I do not owe it. I asked "the frog is protected?"

Heather; Yes the fraud is protected,
Me; The frog?

She busted-up laughing!!!! Nice customer experience and I told Heather: glad to make you laugh, you have a tough job.

It's nice being nice to nice people!:D

Well that's TWO of us that got hit this weekend..:eek:

Bought $70.00 worth of gas @ 8 AM Saturday in Orlando.. and it appears that I bought $110.00 worth of gas in Fort Lauderdale @ 9:30AM..

That means the card was skimmed..info transmitted, and a new CARD was created and used in just an hour and a half..:eek:

Chase Bank was on it and shut the card down even as they texted me the problem.. Transferred all the accounts info to a new card ( minus the$110.00 ) and anew card showed up today..

A pain... but they made it painless.. :D

I've had 3 new Discover cards in the past 2 years. Have to say, they informed us right away and removed all charges no questions asked.

Sort of on the same note..I read yesterday that C C companies are now going to be issuing a new type of CC, that will have a "Chip" imbedded in the black magnetic strip. Supposed to help prevent hacking the card at places like the gas pump.

Article went on to say, that if businesses don't up date their C C readers, then if any theft does occur, then the CC card company was going to charge the business for the loss, because they didn't have the new type of reader....Sounds like another way the CC cards are trying to get out of paying for any theft.

As far as you and I go, nothing will change, we won't be held liable for the charges.

The thing I really find strange when using my credit card.

They never seem to ask for my ID.

Here's another tid bit, (I learned the hard way..:() If you use your card as a debit purchase..I.E. have to use your pin number..and something goes wrong, the card company won't reverse charges...If it was a Credit transaction they will??????

My card a Visa issued by my Police Credit Union does have "Debit" right on the front of it...The money available comes right out of my checking...Debit or Credit....same account.....

If I purchase something...and I use the Credit type of transaction, then if something went wrong...such as I didn't receive the mdse, then I could charge back..reverse the charges....But if I use the Debit transaction, they won't??????

So you might want to check your card holder policy to see what they will honor.

My Visa has gotten compromised a few times. So now I have split off a very small account for "Transactions" and linked one card only to that account so that when I have to replace an attacked card, I don't have to re-do all my auto-transactions linked to the main account.

Wouldn't you think that the Credit Card people would put your picture on the card to help stop unauthorized people from using it. I understand it would not stop all of the theft but I think it would help.

That is the reason I totally refuse to have/use debit cards. There more problems than their worth.

I can use cash, check or CREDIT CARDS, that has allowed me to do anything I want over the last many years since I tuned of legal age!

That's why I never use my debit card. CC charges - you spending banks money and they will do everything to get it back. Might be related to that recent data leak from Home Depot. I actually received an email from Home Depot they provide a year of free credit report monitoring service.

We went shopping Sunday where we normally go and after getting home we had a phone message from the credit union monitoring company saying they suspected CC fraud and to call them. My wife got very upset and did and was told it was okay but for some reason they didn't explain why they suspected fraud on that transaction.
I couldn't figure it out but glad they're diligent anyway. I just got a new CC and debit card from them too saying they were concerned they were compromised. Wife has same accounts there and hers weren't changed out.

That situation could come with a lot of stress. I like the way you turned it into a humorous event that ended happily. Glad you came out on top. ;)

I just got caught up in the Home Depot hacking. I bought a lamp on line to be shipped in to the local store. The charge hit my card 9/10, and on 9/12 there was a $31.09 charge (swiped) at the Jack in the Box in Pamona CA, (about 2000 miles away) I've never been in CA in my life. Only took 2 days for the hackers to create a dup card and sell it in CA. Luckily Bank America took it off my account, and closed the account immediately and issued me a new card. My new card does now have the chip in it, but still the old cards expiration date of 2/15. You'd think if they were replacing it they would have at least issued it with a new expiration date.

When I moved to CO, I belonged to one bank. I bought a book online from Barnes and Noble and was hacked by a company in Egypt. Emptied the account. Luckily for us, I always keep some cash in the safe. That bank treated us like garbage. We had to live off of the cash for a week until it was resolved and the money given back. To make matters even worse, when we went to the bank to file the paperwork, the manager actually laughed when she told us how "horrible" it was.

We switched to Ent credit union the day after we got the money back. First thing we asked was how they'd handle that situation. They said they'd give us the money back right away to minimize the inconvenience, then investigate. If their investigation showed we lied, they'd take the money back.

The couple times attempts have been made on the account now, they catch it and call before we've even noticed.

Knock on wood but--Navy/Army FCU is an excellent banking institution. They had been hacked--kinda-once about a year ago and we were all notified instantly--cards cancelled and new ones issued. The last time I had any bad luck--was when all three of my then--credit cards numbers--were somehow stolen and they were all maxed out. There were all MAstercard cards. I had done everything I was told to do--police reports yadda yadda yadda. Did get SOME chargers dropped--but they refused on two--the most expensive ones too. Someone in france--somehow got my numbers and bought a German Coo Coo Clock and a pair of glasses with diamonds set in them. Cost was about $4,000. Well, needless to say--I never bought those items and ive never been in La Belle France either.

Anyway, once this mess was finally cleared--some years later--ill never ever accept a credit card from Mastercard--ever again--and they have been mailing me pre-approved--and for a higher amount than I had 14 years ago. Nope--not interested.

You should never use Debit cards, IMO.
The are extremely dangerous to the holder.
Congress passed sone excellent customer protection laws for Credit
Card users.
Way to go Congress! That's one in a row!
The banking industry fought the passage of these laws all the way.
When they lost, they just went out and invented Debit Cards.
So if you want the protection afforded by the law of the land, you use credit cards.
If you want to risk everything you have in your bank account, you use Debit Cards.
It is your choice. We still do have a few choices in this country!
