I'm spending a wet snowy day here in Georgia going through some ammo cabinets and finding lost and forgotten treasures(?). Can anyone tell me about this load? I have a full sealed 50 round box that I do not remember ever buying or shooting. Does anyone have performance numbers on it/ experience with it?
Thanks for your time.

Okay....According to the stats that I have, the CCI 357 mag 140 JHP factory load gets 1380 FPS from a factory 4" vented barrel. As you may know, the actual velocity will vary from gun to gun even with the same barrel length and so you will never know what it gets from your gun unless you actually chronograph it.

Having said all that, the 140 gr is quite popular with some as it seems to be a compromise between the 125 and 158.

I recall that 38/44HD45 did some experimenting with this loading, and found it lacking. Perhaps a search would turn up his data - it wasn't more than 6 months ago that he posted on it, I believe.

In the 70s and 80s this was a popular bullet and weight for cops who carried the .357 Magnum.
It had more penetration than the 110 to 125 gr. bullets then in vogue, especially against car bodies and barricades.
I've not heard much about the Speer 140 gr. for some time. But then, revolvers lost ground to the semi-autos as far as most police departments go.
In the .357 Magnum I still believe it's a good compromise, to ensure ample mushrooming and penetration.
If that box is still sealed, and is an early example, it may be worth something to a cartridge collector. There are some cartridge collecting websites that might give you an idea of its worth. Be a shame to ruin the seal on what could be an early specimen.

Skeeter Skelton liked that load. I think he shot some coyotes, maybe a deer or two with it.

The bullet weight makes a lot of sense with three-inch barrels.

Erich, that was the Hornady 140gr. XTP loading, which performed as I've come to expect from XTPs, somewhere between dismally and almost adequate, regarding expansion. I've not tested the Lawman load. Way back in the old days, I carried a Model 10 with handloaded 140gr. Speer JHPs (same bullet as in the OP) with loads of 2400 that you won't find in modern manuals. It performed wonderfully, and I'd expect the same from the lawman .357s.

Ach! Thanks!

De nada. I think I was getting about 1100 fps. from the Speer 140s in my Model 10. It was scary accurate. (Some would say, just plain scary!

And, that was WAY before I discovered SR-4756!

) It also expanded like crazy. At .357 velocities, it should work very well.
