Celebrities And Their Personas: Part II

My first was Arnold Palmer-met him at a local gold tournament when I was about 5? I was being "babysat" at the clubhouse watching a Godzilla movie while dad played in the tournament. I didnt know who he was at the time till my dad told me. Palmer bought me a rootbeer sundae-THAT was what was important to my 5 yr old mind.

Next was: James Francis Cagney-at a small outdoor cafe somewhere in L.A. circa 1981. He was a very likable guy-down to earth. Ill skip the unabridged version of this story.:)

Same trip to Kali-we were at Universal Studios-on a tour-and I met-before he became famous--Weird Al Yankovic. Al was playing the part of a long-haired Cowboy.

About 1986--the two Simon and Simon "bros" were in my area filming a Jeep commercial. An arctic front had just blown through-the rain soon stopped. We were a croud of about 100-braving the cold wet torture hoping to get a glimpse of both. I forget the other actors name? but he came out of his hotel room and visited us for about an hour. We all wanted to meet gerald mcrainey too, but all he did was part the curtains in his room for a split second--and didnt come meet those who would seen be his ex-fans.

I also spoke with Gregory "Pappy" Boyington on the phone for several minutes-sometime in 86 as well.

The last "real" celeb I had contact with-was the "Hero of Pork Chop Hill" Col. Joseph G. Clemmens Jr. We have chatted on the phone several times-though not lately.

Another Col I spoke with-was an 82nd Airborne vet-WWII. Cant think of his name off-hand? but PBS has ran a documentary on his actions during Operation Market-Garden. This fellow was a bit crusty-to say the least.

Almost forgot--BGen Tex Hill-and Dutch Van Kirk.

I worked my way through UT as a bank teller. Stevie Ray Vaughn was one of our customers. He was always great! Used to come through the drive-in driving his 1974 bright red Chevy convertible. Always had time to chat and sign autographs!

I gave the members of the Irish bank, The Wolfetones, a lift back to their hotel after they played a show and we sat around drinking Guinness until the bar closed. Ironically, I was off to Dublin the next day. Great guys!!

Ray Thomas of the Moody Blues used to drink at the pub I owned in Houston back in the late 1990s. He was another really good guy. Drove him back to the hotel a few times too!

" It had a very young Dwight Yoakum and Nicholas Cage . My mom worked in a clothing store , sold Dwight a fancy jacket , said he was really a nice guy "

I never met Dwight, but I sold him my old family homestead in Ohio after my father died and my mother had to go into a care facility. He bought it for his parents.
