OK, so I have been of the $15 WalMart "GoPhone" (yep, I'm that ol git at the wal Mart with the flip phon in the shirt pocket) and when it don't take a charge, remove the chip and put it into another one. My wife complains about it, kids point and ask "What is that?" Friends say "I sent you a Photo,Email, Link, article... I can talk and text; for $160 a month (I hate AT&T please don't recommend anything to do with them. Only more predatory American company is Time Warner, hock Ptooey). I got a guy at work has Verizon "Smart phone" (That scares me with having to learn something new) with everything; talk text, internet, email, roaming for $100/ mo with $10 for every add'l line. It's just me and the wife now so I'm leaning this way especially saving $50/mo. Easy to learn would be best. And it would be nice to actually hear what the other person is saying and not having to go into the shower stall at the house to get reception (Thanks ATT hock, ptooey). Joe

verizon's plans have changed lately, there are no $10 second and additional phones. it's $40 per phone for unlimted talk and text, data(internet) is then shared and depends on how much you share...my wife and i just moved from straight talk to verizon. we share 2 gigs of data per month and our total will be around 140-150 after taxes. we did this so we could get iphones...we got the 5c for $27 each through walmart. i liked straight talk, great reception, $49 per month per phone for unlimited everything, but the phone selection was not good for the prices that the phones cost. the ones we started with were good, but were starting to fail after 1.5 years.

we had verizon in the past and liked it so that is what we went back to

If you are going to get a smartphone and are looking for the most user friendly I would suggest taking a look at iPhone. My wife, who had an iPhone for the past couple years, decided she wanted to try the latest and greatest Samsung Galaxy S4 because it had a larger screen. After nearly two weeks she gave up and returned it for the iPhone 5s. I am sure the Samsung is a more capable phone in more capable hands, but the iPhone just seems far more intuitive for non experts.

I have a Verizon basic phone, flip phone, dumb phone, old man phone -- you got the idea. My wife has "internet", text-a-matic, everything phone. I pay ~$95 for both phones.

I'm satisfied and she is compatable with her sisters. Life is good.

I have a Smart Phone and got on my daughters Sprint account. $40 per month. It works for me.

Although I use/used a lot of technology at work (iPad in the courtroom, with all sorts of useful links; on-line research, etc) and have been using a computer account on a regular basis since 1980, I stick with my basic Samsung Rugby. 5 years old, talk, text, crummy photos, and cheap. I don't want a small screen internet device right now, thank you.

The wife and I have Galaxy S4's on Verizon and love them. But based on what you have said I would also suggest an iPhone for your initial jump into the world of smart phones.

Sorry Joe, I can't help you. I've got the ol geezer Samsung Verizon flip phone, can't do anything but make phone calls which is why I bought it, runs $35/mo. I don't need a laptop in my hand, I have one at home which is where I'm in front of almost ALWAYS!

I have a flip phone. The operative word there is "phone". I don't text (arthritic fingers are too clumsy), check e-mail, play games, read the news or expect it to give me a pedicure. It's illegal for me to send "selfies"--the charge is "visual pollution".

I carry this relic for emergencies or so family or select friends can reach me when I'm out--I forward my land line when I leave home.

I'm not opposed to the smart phones at all, nor am I a Luddite, but I fail to see that I need one. The simpler I can keep my life the better I like it.

Son gave me his old I pad and I phone. Have no clue as to what kind it is. I never thought it would be worth having. I was wrong after some difficulty getting used to the way it worked it is a neat thing. Older granddaughter will not answer if you call. Text her and she ll wear you out.

I agree with you man, keep it simple. Like has been stated, I have a desk top computer, don't need one for my pocket. I switched from AT&T to Straight Talk several years ago and haven't been happier! Decent phones, $45 a month for unlimited talk, text and internet if so desired.
Available on line or at Wally World (Wal Mart)
I have never had any problems with service or phones and they do offer free phones on line. Granted, the free phones are not the high teck ones, but they will text and make calls.

Don't hurt to take a look.
Welcome to Straight Talk

I have a flip and my wife has a "smart" phone. Take a look at Consumer Cellular, no contracts and reasonable prices.

We are going that way as soon as our Sprint contract is up, will save about $60 a month.

Some of the things I regulary use my smartphone to do.
For those with arthritic hands you might be surprised at how little typing is required. Voice recognition has advanced so much in past few years it's amazing. You can literally just talk at normal speeds and these new smartphones pick it up near perfectly.
