Like many people, I have dropped my cell phone (yes I keep it in a case) enough times that I now have a pretty good crack in the screen.

I stopped into a joint that has near my office to see if they might help me but had to be helped up off the floor when I was told the installed cost was $300.00 - Plus tax.

This is not the window on the space shuttle ..... It's the screen on a Samsung S8+ that originally cost me about $1,000.00. The kid behind the counter said "It's because we buy them directly from Samsung and they cost more"

I walked out with my cracked screen and knew I could live with it.

Have you replaced a cell screen lately and does $300.00 seem high to you??

Thanks

I guess it all depends what model phone you are talking about. My kid broke his several years ago - I think it was maybe a iPhone 5c - There was a local kid in my area that had a business repairing the things, and he charged about $70.00 to replace the screen and address another issue or two. Most decent sized malls also have someone in a kiosk that does repairs as well.

My boy used to have a sideline replacing cracked screens on iphones. I think he charged something like $30-50, and made enough to make it worth his time. Then commercial places came along and did it cheap enough that he couldn’t meet their price and still be worth it. I don’t know the exact numbers, or if there is any reason a Samsung should cost so much more, but I’d say look at the Yellow Pages, or its 2020 equivalent, Google.

I have a motorola G7 power that I bought a year ago. It turns out he battery has a habit of swelling (memories of my wife's I phone 5) except,,,

It's a sealed unit and you can't replace the battery with out ruining the warranty.

Lucky me, I kept using it but the protective case wouldn't stay snapped due to the battery swelling and I dropped it.

Cracked the screen.

Motorola called it "physical damage" and won't replace anything.

I have a Samsung S9. The later model Samsung phones all have rounded-over edges and Yes, the screens are more than the price of a similar flat-glass screen. They are also watertight to certain standards so that makes opening the case that much more problematic.

That being said, they are ripping you off at $300. The parts kit for my S9 including a new glass screen is only $40-50, and I can't imagine there being $250 worth of labor to install it.

Take your phone somewhere else.

I've got one of those last year also. Decent phone for $250 (I refuse to pay a great deal more). Cracked the screen. Found a place in town that could replace it for $125. Then I found I could buy a whole new phone for $175. Haven't done it yet but that will be the route I go when I get tired of looking at cracked glass.

Lotta options out there.
Look around, maybe a parts only phone on the auction sites as a donor part.
I've been told you can do it yourself once you have the correct part.
Wish ya the best as I would be really reluctant to pay that much if the part is 1/10 of that quote.
It cant be rocket science.

In February I bought a complete new OEM Apple touch screen, digitizer, and home button for my iPhone SE for $18. I bought a complete tool kit to do that job and possibly many others for about $15. I had to remove about six or eight tiny screws and unplug a couple wire connections. The hardest part of the job was plugging those wires back in due to way they line up.

Thanks for the comments. First off, I'll check another 1/2 dozen fix it joints. Second off, I'm amazed at the number of folks on this forum that have the mechanical skills to literally do it themselves.

Me, not so much. I struggle changing light bulbs .....

You didn't say where you are, but in New York City or San Francisco or other affluent city they may get $300, but remember that a Samsung screen is always going to be more expensive than some generic. I don't know if your model has an AMOLED screen, but if it does they are always going to be more expensive than a normal led. I've replaced my Lg V10 and it cost 75.

My son just had one done 75 bucks.

Apple ones run about $50-75. I think i could tackle it myself but it ain’t worth the hassle.

With my Apple Care (Which cost me $100.00) a replacement screen is $50.00 but in Manhattan I can get that done in a bunch of Non-Apple Shops for $50.00. But then you don't get a warrantee.

Those are great prices! Where’d you buy these?

cell phone cracked screen costs

When I purchased my I-phone seven for my wife and I, I took out the insurance and had the dealer insert a plastic covering to protect the screen. I have dropped it several times and still intact. I recommend both the insurance and screen covering for a minimal payment with the monthly cost of the phone service.

My son has replaced several for himself and his friends. The parts are usually $30-$40. Sometimes less. Keep in mind that the lower priced screens are sometimes not up to the same quality as the OEM gorilla glass. Those are often just regular glass. That means they might be easier to break next time the phone is dropped. He buys his screens on amazon, and only buys the ones that are gorilla glass.

He doesn't like working on Samsungs, though. He says the screens are much more difficult to replace than iphone screens are. That may be why they charge so much to do it. I've watched him change an iphone screen in about ten minutes.

In all my years of cell phone use - I've had at least 7 different phones over the years - I have yet to break one. I always search out the most protective cases I can find for any phone I buy, though. My current G7 power has an Otter Box case on it. It's very heavy duty compared to most cases.

I had a Samsung 8 Active that the battery would not last all day. Checked numerous places abut having the battery replaced. They all quoted $300 because they said they would break the screen replacing the battery, and the $300 included a new screen.

Purchased a Sonim phone.

Traded my phone for a 3X9 power scope.
