I work in a school and the local police department did a safety presentation to faculty and they showed us a video of a gun that appeared to be a cell phone. The were trying to make the point that police will view someone with a cell phone as potential armed and will respond accordingly. How wide spread is this contraption? Has anyone else seen this?

If your local PD says they view everyone with a cell phone as "potential armed" (sic) you need to move or...the police chief should be fired. And the mayor and city council folk should be fired for hiring such a moron.

Seriously, such a contraption is very, very, very, very (enough very's?) unusual thus my preceding comment.

Be safe.

So in actuality guys,
What is being employed?
Latter day zip gun, housed in a cell phone?
A Derringer of some type, enclosed in a rubber banded together inert phone's case?
Other?

Do "cell phone guns" represnet an alarming turn in concealed weaponry technology? Probably not, as a customs spokesman maintained that "there's no indication that these are being mass-produced," and a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms noted:

Though the novelty of cell phone guns is interesting, ATF spokesman John D'Angelo says the idea of concealing firearms in common devices is not new. "Disguised weapons have been around forever. We've seen guns in the form of canes, pens, beepers. As technology progressed and becomes more prevalent, disguised weapons will change to mirror that."

So does that mean that they will respond the same way to a businessman with a briefcases?

How about someone jotting down a note?

I work closely with local schools as part of an area gang task force, and it's this kind of alarmist BS that gets teachers and administrators jumping at their own shadows and screaming "Gang!" (or "Gun!", as the case may be) at every turn. Maybe they'll realize their mistake after the PD gets their 47th "student with a gun" call from the school, due to some teacher overreacting.

Ok, how do I buy a pen-gun? Are they legal? Do they have a serial number?

Find a dealer that will order one for you. I believe Serbu was making these.

The are legal in many states, federaly they are controlled as an AOW (Any Other Weapon). These require an NFA tax stamp and approval like a machine gun or silencer. The stamp is only $5 for an AOW not $200. These are serialized, like any firearm

Let me tell you a little more about the police comment. It was in reference to how they would react to someone with a cell phone where they are not supposed to be in the case of a school lock down due to an active shooter. The police responded really well to teachers questions and put a lot of fears to rest.
I think our local police have been great about the whole thing and they haven't overreacted, they were just sharing info.
I do agree that sometimes teachers get really nerved up about these things. One of the points of the police presentation was to inform them so they wouldn't get nerved up and they did great.
