Bruce Dern is still with us I'm happy to say.

My favorite baddies were Jack Elam and Robert Wilke although Elam did plenty of comic roles too. Those two were killed by just about every major star who did Westerns.

I never liked Bruce Dern. Hated him. Avoided movies he even had a small role in. Couldn't put my finger on why, just did. Then I saw an interview he gave about a conversation he had with John Wayne on the set of The Cowboys. They were about to shoot the killing scene, and Wayne turned to him and said, "They're gonna hate you for this." Suddenly, it clicked: HE KILLED JOHN WAYNE! That's why I never liked him!
Once I knew that, I was able to go back and revisit his roles and appreciate him for his performances. I'm glad I did.

Bruce Dern and Lee Marvin spring immediately to mind, but I think my vote has to go to Gene Hackman in “Unforgiven.” He deserved the Oscar he was given for the role.

Many Western villains tend to be over-the-top, but Hackman was twisted and casually cruel.

And, morally convinced he was right. Scary thing. Like the rest of the movie, it rang true. Hackman's performance was brilliant. Perhaps his best, and that's saying something.

I thought Brad Pitt in The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford, was excellent as a bad guy. Totally creeped me out.

Liberty Valance by Lee Marvin dripped of menace ... whatever was the name of that movie ;- j But for reckless evil, hard to beat Kim Coates in "Open Range".

Jack Elam and Jack Palance, but the biggest shock I ever had watching a western was "Once Upon A Time In The West" with Henry Fonda out of character as the cruelest bad guy ever.

Jack Palance in “Oklahoma Crude” is the Hollywood caricature of a villain, dialogue, wardrobe, the works, very campy.

Randy Quaid dumping his motorhome down the storm sewer comes to mind. Then there is Chevy Chase on a sled like "piece of Government plastic". You do have to agree with Bonnie Bedelia "Nobody can tic somebody off that much but John".
