I had the distinct pleasure and privilege to be assigned the duty of being very close to Charley Pride during the time he was in the small town where I was a city policeman. I believe this occurred in the year of 1967. He performed at the college gymnasium which was new at the time and the biggest such place available at the time. I spent over four hours with this gentleman that evening, including being very close at hand while he was performing.
I was able to spend a good part of those hours being personally close to him, part of the time when he and I were the only ones present. I escorted him to and from the stage and in and out of the building. This man was the nicest person, especially among the several other performers and personalities that I was in personal contact with over the next many years at different times under similar circumstances. I have the greatest possible respect for him as a person, and I am also one of his biggest fans. He was humble, polite and very well mannered, and would sit and talk with me just as if we had grown up together. He was very comfortable with himself, but in no way overly impressed with his success or who he was. He was who he was, wherever and with whomever he was around. And he was a great performer as well. I had the opportunity to spend some time with him again after he really became "famous". He was the very same man he was when I first met him before he really became well known. And as far as I know, he is the same man today. I have a great deal of respect for him, as opposed to many of the other famous personalities that I had occasion to spend time with and around. The only other such person who comes very close to being the same kind of person, in my experience, is Chet Atkins. Spending several hours with him was also a pure pleasure.
Charley Pride is the real deal and in every way, a true gentleman who just does what he does and enjoys it very much. I can tell you that his head is the same size it has always been, and I'd be very happy to be around him anytime anywhere!
