Charter Arms Bulldog 44

Charter Arms history is well known. The Bridgeport and Stratford guns were pretty solid. When the change of ownership happened and they moved to Ansonia things fell apart and they closed the doors. Since Nick Ecker started the company back up they made improvements and have continued to do so making pretty solid guns once again. I live about 15 miles from the factory. Mr. Ecker gave my wife and I a tour of their faculty last year and let both of us fire a few new guns while there. He is a top notch and so is his organization. I have a few of there guns now and they have been good. Actually going there again next week. Emailed them a question the other day about my Mag Pug and they said come on by. I do look forward to it.

OP that's a nice looking Bulldog you have there. Enjoy it.

I forget all of the particulars, but I don't think they ever failed from lack of sales. Charter Arms was sued out of existence at least once by nuisance lawsuits. They re-located, redesigned weak points of their older guns, and went to CNC machining, and are back stronger than ever.

I really should get another Bulldog.

You all are wearing me down. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for one of these guns. What a great carry revolver.

2 questions-
What kind of ammo do you all use for conceal carry?

How bout the 45 ACP version, anybody try one.

My "house" gun is a 4+" barreled Bulldog, it lives in a fingerprint lock box in the bedroom with a Rossi 92 carbine. Both are loaded with 200 grain .44 Special Gold Dot HP.

My son has my .45 Pitbull, ballistically it's the Bulldog's twin. My favorite handloads used the same amount of propellant with 225 grain .429s or 230 grain .451s.

The .40 S&W Pitbull is pretty neat too. I wish they made the .40 and .45 with 4" tubes. Mine have been 100 percent functional and reliable, just not as nicely finished as an older Smith.

To add to the discussion of Charter Arms here: This LNIB Bridgeport Undercover displays the good quality of the early guns. Now I need to find that early Bulldog to make it a pair. ;):)

What PD are you with? Can't imagine many issuing Charter Arms Bulldogs. Not saying they don't, just don't hear of things like that often and I think it's kinda cool.

My PD had a closet full of lost, found and confiscated weapons. The officers were allowed to go through and pick out duty and off-duty handguns. At one time, I had checked out a couple of 1917s, both Colt and S&W, a Charter Bulldog and a Colt Cobra. Unfortunately, I had to turn them in when I retired. I tried to buy the Cobra, but no go.:(

What really hurt was that I was told that the 1917s were to be destroyed, since no one wanted clunky old revolvers. :( :(
