I found a gun store that listed a model 28-1 for sale for $695. It was within driving distance, so on the off chance that it was real, I took a pocket full of cash and presented myself at the store with all the relevant numbers from their Internet listing. Strangely enough, they couldn't find the gun. I don't think this was an intentional fraudulent listing, just stupidity and sloppy bookkeeping - hope their bound book is in better shape than their Internet listings.

Theoretically, what would a 28-1 be worth? Five figures? Maybe six?

I THINK the last one sold went for around $3000 or so, if I recall.

That's a very rarely seen version of the Model 28. I suspect the shop sold it and never took it off of their advertised inventory. Unless it is beaten to pieces, modified, or rusty, a 28-1 would fetch far more than $695.
