Cheap Ammo or Magazine Spring?

Howdy all!

Brand new to the forum, was hoping you guys could help me out.

My father passed down his M&P 45 full size to me for Christmas. Gave me some decent ammo and first time at the range it chewed through 100 rounds of that no problem. My roommate got the itch and went and bought his own pistol (XDM 45) so we decided to split the cost on a bunch of cheap Federal ammo for the range.

Now for the problem. I'm having feed issues, usually after a few magazines and then the last or near the last round in the mag. I think it's the ammo but my roommate thinks it's the magazine and the ammo. Mags are probably as old as the pistol, pulled them apart and the springs look fine.

What do you guys think? If it is the spring, where can I get replacements? Wolf Springs doesn't seem to have springs for the M&P 45.

Thanks in advance

Not having seen it, I wonder how clean is the magazine? Take it apart, spray everything with a solvent like CRC silicone and wipe DRY. Reassemble.
If you need a new spring, the ones from S&W are excellent. Generally the springs are fine for 5ys/ 5000rounds.

Excess lube on the gun catches grit quickly and can also cause FTF.

It looked clean, wiped the spring and nothing really came off. I'll try the CRC though.

Can I order those springs online?

Thanks

You need to clean the inside of the body/tube of the magazine and the follower. Residues there can interfere with a smooth strip of the cartridge from the magazine.

Given your description of when the malfunctions ocurr, fatigue may be allowing your grip to become less firm as shooting continues. This will allow movement of the entire weapon to rob energy from the slide and cause malfunctions.

Next question, is it new factory Federal or did someone reload it????? Try some of the ammo your Dad provided and see if that solves the problem.

Good point, I'll have to pay attention to my grip when it occurs.

It should be factory Federal. All the ammo my father gave me fired with no issues.

The fact that you've mentioned it happens on the last round makes me lean towards bad spring option... If that would be ammo it effect would be more widespread, wouldn't it?

Once in a great while (2 or maybe 3 times in 50) I have a bit of trouble after cleaning and re-assembling my FS M&P magazines. After cleaning I always load the mags then strip the rounds by hand, if the follower is going to stick or cant a little it does it then. When I have this problem it is usually with either the first round removed or with only 1 or 2 rounds left in the mag. I take everything out and re-wipe and re-assemble again. This has solved the problem each time.

It wasn't any specific mag, I am sure it was me. But with my 4513 and my FS M&P, I have never had a FTF.
