cheap Ammo?

As a new shooter ( 6 mo.) I have one gun a .38 Night Guard. After firing 100 rounds at the range I notice that my trigger finger is black from powder residue at the 1st joint. Also, the meaty part of my hand between my thumb and forefinger that rests under the hammer also has some residue. I don't see this when I use a rental semi-auto. Is this common for relvolvers or should I use better ammo?

while the ammo may be dirty, I doubt it's doing any harm to your gun. What are you using? I got some BVAC from Cheaper than Dirt and it's nasty stuff but it goes bang every time and is fine for the range. I'd swear it's loaded with black powder.

I am using American Eagle 158 grain with lead bullet. It is very smoky also. Does that gunk build up in areas of the frame that you can't get to to clean?

Just about any cast bullet load is going to be sooty and smoky compared to a jacketed bullet load. It's mostly the bullet lube, plus a bit of vaporized lead. Won't harm the gun at all, just requires a bit more cleaning.
