Cheese cloth

About to do some old-school cheese making and discover...no cheesecloth.

Raid the first aid kit. No gauze.

So...some of you who might remember old school ways of doing things like cheesemaking...anything else that will work in a pinch?

Nylons? Windowscreen? Shoprags?

I gave those away about 12 years ago...those would work great but I was hoping for something I had here at the house. I don't want to go anywhere right now.

I could wait and make the cheese tomorrow...

In all honesty, how about a regular dishtowel? It just has to be able to strain the curd.

Paper towel?

I had to "drain" some yogurt and lined a sieve with a single thickness of paper towel and poured the yogurt in and let it stand for 30 minutes or so. Dried it out enough but not sure about curds. If you have to squeeze them by wrapping and twisting the cheese cloth then I doubt the paper towel will hold up. Just an idea..

My local Walmart Superstore has real cheesecloth in the sewing section.

Pantyhose was a winner.

I know stores have it in the cloth section, I just didn't want to go anywhere last night. As far as Wal Mart goes, i haven't patronized them in years (Save Money, Live Better, without Wal Mart is what I say) and from what I understand the ones around here have done away with the fabric departments.

Couldn't tell ya, years ago I acquired a box of 10 yards of cheesecloth from work (we used it for polishing or something) and still have at least nine of it left.

..............ahhhh...never mind....

It was a completely innocent statement.

Now...maybe next time I will use a shop rag if I still ahve forgotten to buy cheesecloth.

While MIL was visiting from Germany I came home and found a distended pillowcase hanging from faucet.Making cheese.

Yep. My grandmother used loose woven cotton pillow cases for that purpose. I remember seeing a couple of them hanging at a time.
