Cherry Jam

My late Aunt Mona owned a cherry farm in Perkin's Ridge, KY.

Dad would take us there quite often to stay overnight.

Cherry glazed pork chops, ham baked with cherries and pineapple, pineapple upside down cake with cherries, cherry cobbler, cherry pie, cherry muffins, cherry tarts, cherry preserves, cherry jam, etc, etc.

We would sleep upstairs in her old farmhouse which had a tin roof. We prayed for rain at night.

It was one of our favorite places on earth.

We bake pork tenderloins with cherry jam. Good stuff!

I absolutely LOVE fresh cherries! I bought some at $3.99 a pound about 2 months ago at Ingles and they were okay. When those ran out, I wanted to buy them again but they were $6.99 a pound….too expensive. Last week, I saw they were on sale at Harris Teeter for $3.99 so I made the drive just for some. When I saw them, they were spectacular! They were HUGE, with nice color, and tasted superb! I bought 4.5 pounds. I don't think that I have ever had cherries that good before. I wish I had taken pictures of them. They also had some of the yellow/red colored variety (don't remember what they were called) that were just as large and looked just as good, but they were $7.99 per pound, so I passed.

Almost sounds like the "Spam" M.P. skit. But I bet all that stuff your aunt made was marvelous!

My folks had a cherry tree in their backyard. Had cherry pie almost nightly. My mother never made jelly out of them. Her thing was sand plum jelly. So wonderful. My sister made some last year, first I'd had in 10 years or so. I was on cloud 9. We have a couple of pear trees at my house along with some plumb thickets. No plums this year but plenty of pears. One of my secretaries always wants a few buckets for pear butter.

have done a few rounds of fruit and vegetables this summer si far... peaches twice, cherries once, blueberries twice, tomatoes and pickles this week... all wonderful
