There is a chance I may get another paid move out of Uncle Sugar, and I'm considering Cheyenne. My wife has family there, and home prices seem pretty reasonable. I've been there a couple of times, but never with an eye toward living there upon my retirement.

I'd be interested in hearing from current and former residents about what Cheyenne would be like as a retirement spot. I've lived in Minot, ND, and Cut Bank, MT, so the winters don't bother me too much, but its still a concern. I know the wind gets bad enough to close the interstate. How is the hunting for birds and big game? Other considerations?

Thanks in advance.

Spent 8 years there on Uncle Ronnies Rocket Ranch in the late 70's and early 80's. Quite a while ago but the population hasn't changed much. I really liked the people there and hated the climate. We drove 60 miles south to see trees and green grass in the summer(because of the drop in altitude. The average daily wind speed in the winter (9 mos out of the year) is something you have to experience to believe and the cold is miserable. Had 3" of snow one year on the 1st of July! Oh, then there's the tornadoes.....

There is pretty much nothing between you and the horizon except a power line. The hunting nearby isn't much to brag on unless you like antelope and mule deer but within a days drive is great hunting and fishing, hiking and camping of all sorts.

I haven't spent a great deal of time at F.E. I did a 2 week TDY going to Instructor School and we stopped over a time or two and stayed in TLF.

I did go to School at Wyo Tech in Laramie many years ago and enjoyed Wyoming very much.

We almost retired in Sheridan or Buffalo but decided to come back to Colo for family.

You've got E-mail from Cheyenne.

Regards,

If Minot and Cut Bank didn't faze you, Cheyenne certainly won't. (Disclaimer--I'm originally from ND, now live in NE WY.) On the whole I like the climate...but I've got to admit that the only time I ever had to get off the road for wind was in that area. It was blowing semis off the road and we got off the freeway till it settled down.

I spent a 22 yr career in LE in Western OR (also for Uncle) and compared to that Cheyenne is heaven.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...............doesn't Dick Cheney live in Wyoming???

I think he has some "diggin's" up in Jackson Hole, but then every muck a muck with a million bucks or so has a place up there too.

The billionaires are crowdin' the millionaires outta Jackson.

I live in NW Wyoming and travel to Cheyenne every month. Cheyenne is a high desert and runs about 6,000 feet in elevation. Yes, the wind blows (not as much where I live), but keeps the smog away, lol.
If you have questions, my email is in my profile.

I lived in Laramie for about five years, I think Laramie is actually windier than Cheyenne, the wind just whistles through that valley. I liked WY, the summers are fantastic, but the wind and the winters can be rough. Parts of WY are beautiful, unfortunately, not the southeastern part, nor the southwestern either, for that matter.

Those of us who live in Laramie have always felt just a bit sorry for those who are stuck in Cheyenne. But Iggy's right about the wind, and all of us who live here will attest to it!

Wyo, how's the prairie dog shootin' around Laramie these days? We used to shoot a bunch of 'em up around Medicine Bow, but the last year I was there, I guess that was the summer of '94, the plague had pretty much killed them all off, it was tough to find one of the little buggers to shoot.

Cheyenne has all the stores---we have to saddle up the ol' mule & climb up the Summit to get there from Laramie for supplies---you know, bacon, hardtack, shotgun shells, flour... No one buys anything in Laramie if they can help it, they go to Cheyenne to get a more reasonable deal. The weather is always mild compared to Laramie. People in Cheyenne are usually friendly & polite---a lot of military families. Have a friend who moved there and always says how happy he is to have "Escaped Laramie". There is a huge, new shooting range in the works---supposed to be open next year, I think. Everybody goes to Torrington to hunt pheasants. There is a Cabela's about 50 min. east of Cheyenne off I-80. It's not a bad place, but if you want wilderness, it's not that.

Re Prairie dogs at Medicine Bow. Gunners shot 15,000 last year on the ranch and never made a dent in them. I killed 6 with 6 shots with my Model 17 last week. Those were the ones that just sat there and dared me to shoot. They won't do it again.

We have a very strict limit on dogs. If you don't kill at least a 100, you can't come back!!

Three big name gun, pistol grip, and powder manufacturers are going to be there this week end.
They spend the winter creating new guns, and cartridges. One furnishes the break open pistols, another one puts fancy stocks on them and the other creates the cartridges they have dreamed up.

You want to see some exotic guns, they got'em.

One of them shot an antelope with his pistol a couple of years ago at 438 yards. When the all got their antelope, they got down to what they really came for. They spent the rest of the season shooting dogs.

Last spring they brought a suburban full of guns and a U-haul full of ammo. They killed 7000 in a week.

I hope they double that this week end.

I been outta them chutes a few times. I use to run around with Casey Tibbs, Jim Shoulders.

Drove Casey's purple Continnental out in the arena and took him for a victory lap around the race track when he won the championship one year.

The Poleece and Frontier Days Committee took a dammed dim view of that!!

Nuff sed!!

Chip,

I carried my son to Frontier Days when he was two years old and eighteen years later got to watch him ride in the rookie saddle bronc at the Daddy of 'em All...

Su Amigo,
Dave
