Chicken In A Can

I guess two people thought of that at the same time, there used to be more, I wish I could remember them.:(

What about is your refrigerator running.:)

This could turn into another epic thread drift thread! :D

When my wife was growing up, their phone number was one digit off from a local Chinese restaurant. For a long time, they'd patiently explain the mistake, but it got tiresome.

Then my wife and her sister started answering the phone with Chinese accents. They'd take the order and hang up.

There must have been a lot of disappointed people going to that restaurant to pick up their dinner.

Eventually, the restaurant changed their number.

While in the military vacationing in SE Asia in 1967 I received a S.S. Pierce gift box at Christmas with all sorts of goodies.

One item was a chicken in a can.

So it has been 47 years since I had my last and only one. I'll stick with roasted or barbecued chicken.;)

Remember when the BBQ chicken first came out, there was a farm near where I worked that sold them Willow Tree Farm, they also had the chicken salad and chicken pot pie, back then they didn't sell them in stores, you had to go to the farm, sometimes on the way home from work I would stop there, the line was always out the door.:)

Like Labworm, I used to receive packages from home while in Vietnam. I remember a couple of the canned whole chickens. I especially liked the canned Danish hams. Summer sausages and hard salami were always good.

A big pot, a small fire, a canned chicken, a sack of noodles or some rice , maybe an onion or two, some canned vegetables (carrots, green beans, whatever) and we'd have a couple of gallons of decent freshly made food instead of another C-ration delight. I could feed a dozen guys this way.

In the bush having one of the little Danish hams along, or a couple of pounds of summer sausage, were very welcome at meal times.

Even cans of tuna, deviled ham, potted chicken, and other non-perishable stuff made a big difference.

Just about anything was better than another can of ham & lima beans, or canned scrambled eggs with ham, or the other "delicious and nutritious" meals planned in the bowels of the Pentagon.

I can see canned whole chickens being pretty useful for folks living off the grid in Alaska, or elsewhere. As long as the can doesn't freeze it should be good for a year or more.

Funny you should mention that, when I first got married our phone number was one off from a Pizza joint and from about 5 PM on our phone would be ringing off the hook, I got so mad I started taking orders, that will be # 35 in 20 minutes, thank you, that was back in the day when we had party lines, it didn't take long before they had a private line. :D

When I was a Boy Scout leader I always took a can or two of bacon along on one week camping trips.

When we weren't sure where all the young men were a frying pan of bacon would bring them running.

I've had it once.

Pretty grim.

Probably would sustain life, but the alternative might be preferable.

Could'nt be any worse than ham & Lima beans (cold). Then there was also Chu Lai steak (spam) Didn't mind that though.
An after thought. My Dad sent me a whole bunch of Hershey bars when I was there. One solid lump of melted chocolate. Still tasted great once you peeled all the paper away.:)

I guess it's pretty good

My wife prefers the canned whole chicken to make chicken and noodles.

It's sometimes hard to find, so we started canning chicken ourselves (we use pieces, not whole chicken). The Ball Canning book tells you how to do it. We use a large pressure cooker. Tastes fine and we haven't gotten sick yet. By the way, canned beef makes the best hot beef sandwiches.

Several years ago, I asked the wife to buy some canned goods we could use as survival rations in case the power went out, or inclement weather prevented us from going to the grocery store for shopping. One of the items she bought was the Sweet Sue brand whole chicken in a can. That can sat in the back of the pantry for quite a while, until I noticed its expiration date was approaching. We made plans to have the chicken in a can for supper, and I think everyone had their taste buds set for a great chicken dinner - I mean, look at the picture on the can...that's one good looking cooked chicken!

What came out of the can was not what was pictured on the label. What we got was a can of chicken broth, a lot of skin and bones, and maybe a few mouthfuls of chicken meat. Boy was I steamed! After that, we stuck with the canned hams and soups for "emergency rations".

Oh, by the way, when we were kids, one of our favorite phone calls to make to the grocery store was:

Us: "Do ya'll have frog legs?"
Grocery store: " Why, yes, we do."
Us: "Wow! Where do you buy your pants?"

It was a lot of fun until the day we got someone at the store who started yelling at us and cussing us out. Some people, especially those with frog legs, apparently don't have much of a sense of humor.

Regards,

Dave

We tried the canned white meat chicken from *am's Club. We had a little stomach distress! The dogs tried it and had the full blown runs! So I guess it depends...

I've eaten a LOT of the canned white meat chicken from Sam's Club. I've never so much as gotten gas from it. My cat just LOVES it, too. It makes great chicken salad sandwiches.

Chicken in a can? YUCK! Meat in a can is gross. I bet it has a funny taste.

Most of that canned meat has enough nitrates- nitrites to make a IED.
I have eaten a lot of canned stuff - military rations, survival kit rations, and the usual grocery store pork-beans, etc.
So far I have avoided whole canned chicken and canned tamales.

If I recall? Charles Bronson took some from Elizabeth Montgomery in the Twilight Episode:"Two.' He seemed to enjoy it rather well.:-))

But seriously, ive heard and seen it and when in the Boy Scouts--our Scoutmaster--Mr. Genz--would bring several cans along. We never ate it directly out of the can but scrubbed clean of the disgusting gunk it was packed in--then heated in a pot or fried a bit--and it was pretty good. However, the one time I ate it--I got a case of the runs.

My mother grew up poor in the 1950's, one of nine kids. For some reason they were never on the receiving end of government welfare food directly.

When I asked her if she had ever seen whole canned chickens, she said the family's that got the free food turned their noses up at the canned chickens and gave the canned chickens to her family.

My Grandmother made soup with them and my mother said it was good.
