I have a M-36, SN: 487158, 2", SB. My question, is this a pre 1968 that would be wearing diamond center stocks? Super nice gun but I think the wood may not be original. Thanks in advance.

The serial number appears to be from late 1966/early '67.

Have you pulled the stocks and looked for a stamped number on the the inside of the right panel? OEM Magna grips were marked well through the '70's.

Stocks should be numbered to the revolver. Also, the directives to delete the diamond on Magna stocks were issued in October 1965 and January 1966, much earlier than the directive to delete the diamond on NT and KT stocks.

Model 60 478661 and Model 60 490035 both shipped in early '68,
January & March, respectively.

They both wear s/n matching diamond magna stocks.

Your stocks appear to be the second style no-diamond magnas,
and I doubt they number to the gun.

They are not numbered at all. They have that blue stain on the inside which I thought indicated they were replacements from S&W. Of course I could be mistaken on that point.
