This is my first post on the forum, and here's one of my few collectable S&Ws. The October American Rifleman article "I Have This Old Gun" inspired me. Hope the photos come out, especially the letter. This shows Colt was interested in the new J frame S&W... Now I need to get a S&W letter to go with the Colt one!:)

Not sure about the year, but probably the first month or so of production (that's why I should get a S&W letter). This is a 'Safe Queen', and since it is nearly unfired I'll find other things to shoot. The pistol is 99%+, with a few scratches and some wear on the screw slots (wonder how many times Colt disassembled this?).

I probably paid too much for it at the time, but the value has caught up by now. Even though I don't collect Smiths, just couldn't pass up an S&W with a Colt letter.:) Easily the most unique S&W in my collection.

Beautiful, and very collectible - it is a "baby Chief", and with the half-moon front sight that went away within the first two years or so of production. Definitely worth a letter.

Absolutely fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been looking for one of these for years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Should you ever decide to dispose of it, PLEASE put me as #1 on the list.

That is just COOL.
I love it.

If you dip it in Clorox, it should take the Colt taint off....:D
I would definitely letter the gun.

Welcome to the forum. That counts as a grand entrance.

A baby chief is an attention grabber by itself, but one in the box at 99% with a Colt letter of provenance? I'm speechless.

Puts me in mind of one of my favorite movie quotes of recent years: "Guy named Otto Octavius ends up with eight arms. You gotta ask yourself -- what are the odds?"

(From Spiderman 2. Yeah, I know. Sorry. My grandkids recommended it. :o)

Early Production Chief's Special

My opinion, whatever you paid for this revolver is insignificant, it should be worth every penny and with the extras, sir you hit the "Home Run". Nice to know the competition was interested and it is obvious why they would have been. Pristine example of an early production Chief, thanks for sharing and Congratulations & Welcome to the forum!

A Colt letter on a S&W J-frame. Priceless.

Just to kick around numbers, if this were to go up for sale, what might the ballpark value be?

Extremely cool! Truly unique. Welcome to the forum! (Be fun to get a DS with an S&W letter to go with it!)
