CHP 4006TSW: Where are they??

I'm seriously thinking about adding a .40 cal gun to the "collection." Particularly a CHP 4006TSW as my best buddy is a retired Chip (he was still carrying a wheel gun -- big Colt Python -- when he left the Patrol); I have a couple of TSWs and like them; and, although I hate adding another caliber to the safe (they seem to breed on their own) I might relent and add .40.

[I wanted one top break, saw a good deal on an H&R Defender in 38S&W and before I knew it, I had 4 more 38S&Ws: a 33-1, a snub-nosed Defender; a Colt Police Positive, and a pre-war 38/200. Where the heck did they all come from?]

So here's my questions: First, besides Gunbroker and an LGS, does anyone know where they are found online? None here on this board and a web search turned up zilch.

Next, how do they shoot? I'm assuming function/recoil/etc. is somewhere between my S&W 4566 and a 5906.

Finally, what's a decent price. On GB they go from low $400's to silly high. Is $430 a reasonable price? (depending on condition, of course.)

Of course I could just plunk down $250 for a 38/200 British Victory and call it a day, no more guns this month....but that never works.

4006 TSW

Summitgunbroker.com had the CHP 4006TSW for a long time. Now shows out of stock. They still have 4013TSW CHP guns listed as of a few min. ago.

I can tell you that Shoot Straight in Central Florida had an entire table of 4046TSW trade-in's from Brinks at last weekends Orlando gun show with varying degrees of holster wear and grime for $329 each.

I picked up one a few months back and after a thorough cleaning, new recoil springs and Hogue grips it looks nearly new and shoots even better. It's amazing what a bit of dirt can hide!

Went back to factory and has a pass quality check on box
Haven't shot it yet
But w shipping tax and Ca fees

I like the story and chp serial
Would I pay more than that proably not
But this not "collector"
Quality but it's my collection and I intend to shoot it

The supply on these CHP 4006TSW's has shrunk a bit, but there's still plenty on Gunbroker. Paying in the $400's is not a bad price at all, these are integral-rail models and once the supply runs out, I expect the price on these to climb. Some folks are already asking the high price, but evidently they don't look at how many are still being offered for less...

Being all-steel, they will soak up recoil very nicely, and be one of the softer-shooting .40's out there. In general, recoil will still be sharper than a 5906 or a 4566, but easily manageable, even with the lighter 155g loads.

I love my CHP 4006TSW, and I would recommend getting one while they are still somewhat plentiful.

Call Summit and ask to get on his waiting list for a CHP 4006. That worked for me, took about 3 weeks to get mine. I bought a 4013TSW from him too, both purchases went smoothly.

Gun Broker, Waiting for the FFL guys to take care of the behind the scenes stuff and it be here already.

Me: .40S&W is a stupid round. What idiot would buy those?

Also Me: This one is an all metal gun essentially designed for the round so....

What's the quality? or is it random hit or miss

Yeah I got the cheapest one I could find that didn't look like a YouTube torture test was done on it by 3 channels back to back. There was one going for like $1100 and I was crying about a $429 buy it now price. Funny thing is I was looking for 5906 and 4506 and wow they cost way more than this did with less features. My 1st .40 S&W was a gen 3 Glock 22 so this will be a relief compared to that. It felt as if the gun twisted on the axis the bullet spins down the barrel. Like torque steer in a FWD car.

a word of warning, do not shoot 'hot loads' through the 4013tsw. the dept. had them for more than 20 yrs., and the frames will crack at the mag. well. replace the recoil springs

I was very pleased with the condition of the CHP 4006TSW - the condition was 90% IMHO. The 4013TSW had some wear, but nothing I didn't expect. Both are law enforcement trade ins, so there must be some randomness in condition. He does have a representative photo of each on his web site. Both firearms worked great - I completed a 8 hour training class with the 4013TSW back in August and had no problems.

I paid $385 for the CHP 4006TSW and $395 for the 4013TSW, plus shipping which was about $20.

The gunbroker seller I used started rating them excellent at 650
I'm happy with the shooter I received for 399
But I wouldn't pay 650 for an Internet sale

My experience with Summit Gunbroker was exactly that - hit and miss. One 4006TSW was in VG condition, the other was in Good-minus condition, with lots of surface wear and a messed up guide rod. That's the problem when you cannot see the used gun you are signing up to buy. If I bought another 4006TSW, I would use an auction site where I could visually inspect the gun first.

For those guys that purchased these - what springs have you needed to replace?

Recoil I couln't feel the difference that I did when I swapped the original 469 one out. Mainspring visually wasn't that bad but trigger pull felt heavier afterwards. Tomorrow range visit will tell with new springs, grip and a rear sight that isn't pegged far right.

Recoil: left old right new

I only had one experience, mine that got shipped was "nice", but I called and asked for a hand pick and was willing to wait on another shipment. The reports of getting darn near new examples might have tainted my experience.

That said, this thing is a tank and I enjoy it every time I shoot it.

Good luck on that, the gun pictured isn't the one that came to my FFL. I'm like yes I finally found the one at the price, lets pull the trigger. She was blond when we talked and a redhead showed up in person. I got Gatfished.
