Chrnographs, What's Everybody Using ?

If you don't get readings with a set of sky screens that has to plugged into the electronics, it helps to make sure they're plugged in correctly. I think it's readily apparent how I learned this.

I'm not sure Oehler is still in business.

Well, I used to have one of these:

That is what happens when you have a 18 year old son that was trying out his .30/06 over yours with his new scope and forgot about the difference in height from the scope to the barrel!

Of course, right after he did that, he said he would take care of things and showed up at the house with one of these!

Been using one for years and they work and are pretty inexpensive.

FWIW

They certainly are. The Oehler screens are the best on the market, none better, but their chronogrpahs are ridiculously expensive today. I am glad I bought mine before they wuit making them hten reintro them at twoce the price. The entire Chrony like is ****, worst screens on the market.
I have run back to back to back test w/ the Chrony BM, CED & Oehler 35. They all read within 8fps of each other, but the Chrony misses upto 50% of it's shots! Since I accuracy test while chronograhpng, that is just not accpetable. If you only need the occasional PF, a Chrony will work. If yo uuse it a lot, the CED is the better machine by far. An Oehler would be mu choice, but they are expensive & the CED has a few more nice features.

I gave up on the Chrony after getting a useless one replaced by an
equally useless one. Bought a Competition Electronics Pro Digital for
99.00. Works fine.

My first notes made using my Oehler were done in December 1980. It's still in service and the company is still in business. The Chrony is fine. The reason I have one is that it was won in a rifle club raffle. Ungraded to the Beta model when the original was damaged-it will not stand up to .357 magnum's through the case. The thing just jumped up in front of my bullets!!!!

I have bought every chronograph known to mankind, except the Oehlers(which I have used). I just don't want to mess with the cumbersome 3-screen setup.

I enjoy chronoing and handload for every caliber I shoot. I got tired of dealing with sun and wind problems. I solved the problem by buying a bullet trap and a PACT PC with infrared light source. It's set up in my shop so I get accurate results every time. You have to turn off all fluorescent lights and let fresh air in frequently. My nearest neighbors went to Florida so no one hears a thing.

Skip: I had a nice red Chrony that took a .223 hit from my scoped Mini-14. It moved downrange very smartly!

The Oehler does NOT NEED a three screen setup. Mine runs fine on two screens. The only time I can't use it is sunup & sundown, any time inbewteen is fine, even cloudy days.

I have an Alpha Chrony w/softcase, and an Oehler 35P that comes in a rifle case. I carry the Alpha Chrony to the range because the size, and quickness to set up. It is not quite as accurate as I would like, but it is consistant and I can figure from there as I am usually tailoring an existing load.

Several years ago when I was doing some ammo testing I used a Shooting Chrony in conjunction with an Oehler 35P. I was a little OCD and wanted to make sure I was getting the right velocities.
The little Chrony gave the same readings as the Oehler across the board. I think the Shooting Chrony is a good little piece of equipment and all you really need.

I've been meaning to upgrade technology for a while now, this thread prompted me to order a CED-M. It should be here today or morrow.

Rather than hijacking this thread, I started a new one on how to test and calibrate my new chrono with the old...

Y'all would laugh at my chronograph which I purchased in 1979 and still happily use. It's a Oehler Model 12.

I've had a Pact Mark IV for about 10 years now. It seems to be doing OK, gives good readings, easy to set up, pretty trouble free so far.

I'm glad this thread came up...it reminded me to go take the battery out since I haven't used it in about 6 months.
