I chronographed a couple of 357 factory loads and figured somebody here may be interested in the results. I shot some Speer 125 Gold Dots and Federal 158 JHPs in my 4" 627 Pro Series. I'm not a gun expert nor a scientist so take this info for what it's worth. I shot 5 rounds of each over the chrono in the August heat here in Arizona. They were transported to the shooting area in an air conditioned vehicle, of course.

The Speer 125s shot a low of 1493 FPS and a high of 1551, with an average of 1518. The Federal 158s shot a low of 1268 FPS and a high of 1319, with an average of 1289. The report of the 125s was pretty impressive. I was impressed also with the velocity of those 125s, as they were about 50 to 100 FPS faster than the 125 grain 357 Sig rounds we're issued for work. That 357 Sig round, at about 1450 FPS, is an extremely impressive stopper.

I also ran some 10MM 175 Grain Silvertips over the chronograph. These were shot in a Glock 20C. They had a low of 1153 FPS and a high of 1177, with an average of 1164 FPS.

There you go. Hope someone can use this information.

That sounds about right, amigo. Maybe 50-60 fps faster with the 125s than I'd have predicted, but the 158s show that your chrono was dead-on.

Good stuff! :)

Yeah they're moving along. I shot them from a 4 " barrel. Not that impressed with the 10MM Silvetips though. I hoped for at least 1200 FPS. If Speer would make a Gold Dot for the 10MM, that would be something.

OT: I was pleased with the velocities given by DoubleTap ammo in my 1076 (over 1200 fps with 200-grainers from the 4.25" tube), but I've heard other folks complain after the company expanded. Don't know what's happened since then.

Georgia Arms produces all new component 10mm Auto 180-gr Gold Dot (their product # is G10B) that is advertised at 1150-fps but chronos 1185-fps from my G29 with a short barrel. Also, it is flash suppressed.

Here is a pic of the chono printer results. Notice the Extreme Spread and the Standard Deviation numbers. Yep, that's 17/7. Pretty impressive in my book. That's why I carry it in my EDC G29. I can't load my own any better than that. :)

thanks for the info. I'd like to take advantage of those ammo choices, but I'm "stuck" with issue ammo, if I carry it for self defense or work. Our Department has gone almost all Gold Dot, if it's available, for each caliber. If not available we're issued something else. In the case of the 10MM it's Silvertip, which is alright, but not as fast as I think it could be. That and the bullet design is dated a little for penetrating windshields and the like.
