I recently purchased a near-mint Model 36 made in 1970 and was purchased new by my friend's father-in-law in 1974. Of course it has the pinned-barrel and is a square-butt model. Appears to have been shot only a couple of times (no more than 15rnds). Was wondering what kind of value i should place on it? 99% bluing intact with the original grips. No box (Dang). I know this pistol most likely wasn't +P rated so i've kept it loaded with normal velocity SilverTips. Funny that my aluminum-framed 638 Bodyguard is +P rated...

With a 36 in 99% finish you have a gem. Down here in FL., you see them at shows/shops in the $500 range, retail to a user customer. Sounds like a nice little carry gun. Best

By chance, I was at my son-in-law's father's house today and he showed me his 60s era Model 36. It has had less than a box shot through it and looks new and he still has the box. He ordered it for $100 and he paid the person who ordered it for him $10. I offered him twice his money back but he declined. He also had a Ruger Single Six with 18 shots through it that he bought new for $125 as well as a Remington Nylon 66 that he paid $49.95 for. He's 80 but won't sell anything since he loves guns.

I went to the S&W website today and they still make the model 36 with a MSRP of $749.

Offering your in-laws 30% of the value of the equivalent of a new replacement gun might make for awkward Christmas dinner conversation :).

Last week I saw and handled a very nice, 98%, Model 36 at a local gun shop. $465.00.
