In 1977 my now wife was getting ready to start her Senior Year at "THE" Ohio State University. She was a sorority girl and to get all "The Sisters" to Columbus before September 21st, ladies were dispatched hundreds of miles in all directions to bring everyone back into the fold. My future wife and her BFF were sent to Upstate New York to retrieve 2 other young ladies, one from around Albany, and on the way back one of two from around Buffalo.
(They drove in a Sea Green 1966 Oldsmobile F-82, you might have seen them.)

As they drove East on the Turnpike, one billboard stuck out to them. "Next McDonald's 325 miles" They then and there decided that the measure to meet for Civilization was, to be within 60 minutes of a McDonald's!

A few weeks ago we drove past a McDonald's and were laughing about that old story when she noticed we had zero bars of Cell Phone service. 44 years later the criteria for "Middle Class Civilization" is now there must be Cell Service!

What are some other things you use to measure how civilized a location may be?

If you can't pee off the back porch without the neighbors noticing, your neighbors are too close.

Regards to Hunter S. Thompson

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"
― Hunter S. Thompson, The Proud Highway: Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman, 1955-1967

OK, signing off now, having previously determined not to post after bourbon hour.

I have a friend back in England who would get twitchy on road trips if she didn't see a phone box or village name sign every 25 minutes. How she survived her visits to Nevada, Utah, and running I-15 from SoCal I'll never know.

We have a lot of places in NV where cell service is patchy or non-existent with some carriers. You can be within sight of Creech AFB right next to US-95 and not get a signal. That's a whole bunch of no bueno if your car breaks down and you don't have plenty of water.

I have always loved this quote!

At the rate we are going, I will arrive at the pearly gates tarnished, banged up, and puffing black smoke, While my wife will arrive polished, highly adorned with finery, and crowds waiting to see her! But then, of the two of us she has always been the Civilized one!

I figure if it has indoor plumbing, it must be fairly civilized.:D

civilization is determined how far you are from WallyWorld or Lowes/Home Depot. Over an hour away is a clue you are on the edge of the world these days.

I'm 58 minutes from the edge ;)
