...Clark Gable spent most of 1943 in England at RAF Polebrook with the 351st Bomb Group. Gable flew five combat missions, including one to Germany, as an observer-gunner in B-17 Flying Fortresses between May 4 and September 23, 1943, earning the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts. During one of the missions, Gable's aircraft was damaged by flak and attacked by fighters, which knocked out one of the engines and shot up the stabilizer. In the raid on Germany, one crewman was killed and two others were wounded, and flak went through Gable's boot and narrowly missed his head...

And he also owned a RM. Seems I remember he was ordered to cease combat flying duty for fear that the Germans would have a propaganda field day if he were to have been shot down and captured.

Once I knew a guy who had been a personal friend to Gable (actually born Goebel) and he had lots of tales about him. He was a notorious womanizer, and to him whether the target was fat, skinny, ugly, pretty, young, or old made no difference. He did a lot of cross-country train travel, and those were basically rolling orgies. Women just couldn't turn down his advances, but for the most part, it was female passengers who made the advances. Story was that the Pullman car porters would arrange his liason schedule.

I don't think Ronald Reagan ever left Hollywood during the war. He mainly made training and propaganda movies. Despite stories to the contrary. Reagan's biggest contribution during the war was his "discovery" of Marilyn Monroe. Or more accurately, one of his subordinates did while looking for photogenic subjects working in defense plants.

Clark Gable was an Aerial Gunnery Officer whose primary job was to recruit gunners.
We were losing aerial gunners faster than they could be trained.
Clark went to England to make a film about Gunners.
Remember I did the thread about the B-17 Gunner who saw Clark in England.
Clark came into the NCO club and offered to buy a milkshake for everyone.
The guy that I heard tell the story wanted a beer!

Clark Gable made a movie called, Mogambo with Grace Kelly. After, they went on a safari of their own. They were not married and it caused a scandal.

There's a pic of the future Princess Grace holding a .275 Rigby at that time. Nice rifle, nice woman!

Will somene find that pic of Grace and the rifle and post it?

Not too much of a scandal, as Gracie was known to easily "fall in love" with her leading men, or anyone else of interest to her. Even JFK. Jackie hated her, and snubbed her on every occasion. Quite a naughty lady, even though she looked like the girl next door. And of course, Clark Gable was ... Clark Gable. Nothing new for him.

That may have been part of her life...

...and yeah, I wouldn't mind being naughty with her, but she left that behind at age 26 and played her next part as Princess Grace of Monaco with total aplomb.

I'll never forget how completely awful Prince Ranier looked at her funeral.
