Claude Dallas -- Whatta Ya Think?

He killed two Law Enforcement Officers doing thier duty, he conned a sympathetic jury and got a light sentence. He didn't fool the judge who gave him the max he could. He is also a draft dodger.

It is hard to believe everything one reads in wiki, but the basics of the case seem clear. I only very vaguely recall the incident in the mainstream news. I am curious. Why do you ask?

Cold blooded murderer

He was living in the wild poaching game for food, etc.. I think the wardens stumbled on his camp spotted fresh hides drying tried to question him at which time he killed them both. Sounds like murder to me. By the way game wardens are not law enforcement officers anymore than IRS agents are, they are regulation enforcers.

They carry a badge and a gun, and have arrest powers. That makes them LE in my book. What the heck is the difference between a "law" and a "regulation" anyway? Does one get less punishment for breaking a regulation?

yes. Know of any felonious regulations?

KKG is right on. The IRS also has some. I would imagine that certain Fish and Game violations are also felonious. I'm sure the EPA would charge you with a felony for dumping toxic waste, too. Do I need to go on?

I lived in the area at the time many years ago.

There was three distinct camps then as now:

1) folk hero misunderstood and pushed into self defense;

2) felonious murderer who should have been executed on the spot;

3) Claude Dallas who?

It seems those categories remain intact even today.

They are in Texas.

Texas Code of Criminal Procedure:
Art. 2.12. WHO ARE PEACE OFFICERS. The following are peace officers:

(10) law enforcement officers commissioned by the Parks and Wildlife Commission;

i.e. Game Wardens

OK I'll concede. IMO the term law enforcemnet officer is used much too loosely these days.
Someday those we call law enforcment officers today, will be called warriors lumping them in with the military.

I remember the deal. It seems he was well liked by the bar crowd of people he knew. If I recall after escapeing he had plenty people who liked him, knew where he was hideing in a old trailer etc, when recaptured. This doesnt justify anything. Seems he was a hero because he defided the game laws. I belive he thought himself a legend in his own mind playing mountain man.

Wrong. In every state I know they are specifically named in the law defining Law Enforcement Officers. The armed IRS investigators are sworn federal law enforcement officers, just like FBI, ATF, ETC.

I believe in Indiana they are considered LEOs, I don't know but I think they have as much or more authority than the state police. I remember when that happened, to me the sad part is how much could he have gotten for the poached critters? He ended two lives and destroyed his own over that???

A game warden isnt going to pull you over for a traffic ticket. A national park ranger will.
The consevation department has game regulations and laws. How simple can it get? However say a gamewarden is driveing down the road and see`s a deputy or HP dukeing it out with a miscrant, you can count on him stopping and geting in the fray.

I had a few whips at the Paridise Hill bar where he used to hang out not to long after he got tossed in the stoney lonsome. I've read a lot about the whole episode and for a while tried to like the guy...... I think he was an antisocial coward with a sense of the dramitic (probably more from outside pressure than within) that got put in the sights of a certainly very zealous Game Warden. A small man in a big story in an even bigger country.

There is less and less of his breed anymore, but when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's there were a lot of people liveing in the sticks you didn't monkey with or they would shoot you, plain and simple. If you would have pushed my old dad and his brothers you might have dissappeared from this earth without a trace. It's a different life style now but I have mixed feelings about his case.
