Cleaning Heiser

The 6” Heiser has what looks like a white mold forming on it. Want to clean and protect it, love finally owning one. Have some Kiwi Neetsfoot oil from years ago. Is this OK to use? What else is good fo cleaning and protecting? Should be able to see it at the bottom of the holster in the picture. Thanks, Larry

A laundry dryer sheet will remove any white mold and vertigri, and I always use Black Rock afterwards.

I've had good luck using Fast Orange hand cleaner to clean up a few holsters - including a couple floral carved Heisers. There's nothing in it that'll do any harm to the leather, and it takes off any grime in the recesses of the carving. I don't have a 'before' pic of this Heiser 730, but the lacing was almost black before I used Fast Orange on it.

Thanks so far, does the black rock help keep the mold from coming back? Is it a preservative? What about cleaning the green from around the snaps, something with a toothbrush? Larry

Please don't use that Neetsfoot oil. It can damage any stitching there.

I have wiped moldy holsters with a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol & water, 50/50 mix. After they dry I use Blackrock. I don’t get the holster wet, I just clean it with a damp cloth.I use dental picks & wooden picks to clean the verdigris.

Please don't use that Neetsfoot oil. It can damage any stitching there.

Neatsfoot will also darken and soften the leather. Not recommended.

The white stuff may be a previous leather conditioner coming to the surface and not mold.

I use Skidmore Leather Cream on all my leather goods.

The green stuff around the snap is verdigris from brass reacting with the chemicals used to tan the leather and can be cleaned off with a stiff brush or polished off the snap with any mild metal polish.

Dawn is the product they use on birds after oil spiils. I figure it's harmless
enough for leather. A couple of drops in some warm water and wipe the
holster clean with a rag. Then apply Black Rock Leather N' Rich.

Asking what to use on leather is about like asking what's the best gun oil I don't put anything on collectible leather unless absolutely necessary, but I have used a rag just barely wet to clean with. I've used Pecards on leather I actually use and not collect.

oddly enough, it makes complete sense. Leather is tanned animal skin, and Fast Orange is for people skin.
