Hello everyone. I hope to get my first handgun next month and maybe my wife's as well. I have decided on the S&W SD9VE and my wife wants the Ruger LCP. These will be our first guns. I would like suggestions on a cleaning kit, cleaners, oil, etc for the new guns. I am sure there are cheap kits out there that are not all that great but I do not need a serious $200 kit either for a bunch of guns I do not own. What are your thoughts and suggestions? Thanks for the help.

I went to Wally World (Wal-mart) picked up a $20 Dollar handgun cleaning kit, a bag of cotton patches, Hoppe's Elite gun cleaner and gun oil, some cheap toothbrushes, Q tips and a small plastic tool box!

This is just a suggestion. As you will be cleaning two relatively short barreled pistols, go to a gun show or look on line and buy one of the one piece G.I. cleaning rods produced by Kleen-Bore. Buy proper caliber specific cleaning jags and phosphor-bronze cleaning brushes. Plain white cleaning patches will give you good results. Clean using Shooters Choice of some similar product that will deal with any copper fouling. Lubricate using Break Free, etc. A few Q-tips will help with cleaning the small less accessible areas of the firearms. HTH. Sincerely. brucev.

brucev answered your first question very well. As for Amsoil MP, I suppose it will be fine but I just don't like aerosols as they generally spray to large an area and many lose presure before they are empty.

I suggest logging onto Brownell's website and getting QUALITY items like 100% COTTON patches, DEWEY cleaning rods & loops, Brownell's brand of bronze bore brushes and they have just about all types of solvents, oils, preservatives and gizmo's you could ever want.

The store bought pre packaged plastic gun cleaning kits like Hoppes come with cheesy synthetic patches, cheap aluminum cleaning rods, and the components are cheap and fragile as well.

I went to Wal Mart and picked up a Plano fishing lure case and custom fitted the inside (has removable and adjustable dividers) and purchased basic cleaning items such as cleaning rod, patches, brushes and jags. As you get into the sport, you can pick up extra items if you want to. Also good to have are Qtips, used toothbrushes and if you are on good terms with your dentist, maybe some unusable dental picks. I use Gunzilla for cleaning as it cleans the lead and fouling very well. Hope this gives you some helpful ideas.

No need to drop a fortune.

A quart of mineral spirits and a can of 3-in-1 oil will do the job. Cabelas has compact cleaning kit for $12.

Cabela's: Gun Maintenance

Might need to pick up caliber-specific brushes, etc. Old Tees make good cleaning patches. Pipe cleaners and Q-tips get into the nooks and crannies.

I already have 3 in 1 oil as it is just a good all around how lube. Old T shirts I have as it is time to replace them anyway, old tooth brushes I have, I have pipe cleaners from when I use to smoke a pipe. Thanks for the idea as I see now I can do this without spending a lot of money.

I second the use of Eezox. It does a very good job cleaning, then becomes a dry lube. I use Break Free Powder Blast to clean out the rough stuff from the barrel then apply Eezox.
