I've seen some NIB Smiths come with the round end cleaning rod and brass brush. Others also included the cotton swap or wiper. If there any information as to which guns came with the brush and wiper versus which ones came just with the brush?

From what I can find according to the SCoSW #4, page 56, the cleaning rods, or wipers changed from the curved circular handle to the straight handle with the knurled end "sometime in the 80's". I seem to remember brushes and swabs until the mid 80's or so when they switched the SAT's, which might have been the same time the rods were changed.. Hopefully I'm close..

It's my understanding after talking to S&W customer service that free cleaning kits are no longer supplied with new handguns. These kits varied over the years and are now collector items when found on eBay. The ones in sealed plastic envelopes being especially desirable. Collectors have driven prices up considerably so be prepared for sticker shock if you're looking for a vintage cleaning kit.
