for the centerfire M&P at least, no. I'm doing a 2000 round challenge on my M&P compact (2k rounds no cleaning). I started on Nov 1st. Currently at 1700 no haven't so much as put a drop of oil on it. No jams.
Todd Green at the pistol-forum put something north of 50,000 rounds over 7 months, averaging a bit shy of 300 rounds per day through an M&P 9 without cleaning it, they just oiled it periodically. During that test they had 2 failures to fire at the 10k mark, supposedly oil got in the striker channel, and the trigger return spring and slide stop broke around 40k. That was it.
