I have a new 21 dash 4 in 44 special. When viewing the barrel lead the machining marks are rough and deep. I can't believe this will promote good accuracy. Is there a way to minimally clean up the leade (using possibly wet/dry sandpaper) without specialized tools. Has anyone done this and does it promote improved accuracy.

I used a Brownells 11° cone tool on an old Victory. It would build up a lump on one side of the cone. It did shoot much better and was more accurate. The tool was not very expensive for 1 caliber and easy to use; but your 21 is quite expensive! I'd turn it over to a gunsmith.

No. More than likely you will get it out of round. The critical dimension is the size and roundness of the opening at the back of the barrel, not the surface finish or exact angle of the cone.

Suggest you read Jerry Kuhnhausen's shop manual for the S&W revolver before you try "improving" one.

The big question isn't how it looks but how well the gun actually shoots. Shoot it with several loads from a rest and take a look at your groups. If there is an accuracy problem, send it back to S&W to correct.
