What is the best method for cleaning the powder marks off the front of the cylinder and barrel after shooting? I hate to use an abrasive because I think sooner or later I would rub through the nickle.

You're correct, in time, you will wear the finish on the front of the cylinder face. So, if you shoot the gun with any frequency, I say why bother cleaning it off...? If it's a safe queen, that you shoot every once in a blue moon, then sure, get it clean. With stainless revolvers, I clean the cylinder face all the time ('lead cloth' works great on stainless), as I like them clean. But, with blue and nickel, I am much more careful to not rub on the cylinder face.

If you must, Fitz polish, applied very gently works well, or just use a good solvent, and let it soak in before rubbing with a cloth. With nickel, you should be careful not to use ammonia based solvents, as there is a risk of it working it's way under the nickel and eventually causing the nickel to flake.

A GI toothbrush and some breakfree. I stay away from any abrasives when cleaning my revolvers.

Yes, John - The first one, white & blue, is for stainless guns; the last one, camo, is for blue guns. I've tried all else on the market, this is the best product for fast, thorough cleaning of powder burn stains, great for bore cleaning as well.
