hi guys,

Hope you don't mind me posting this here. Although I do not have any S&W firearms I thought some of you might be interested.

I decided to purchase some Clear Ballistics Gel to test my Old West Firearms. Uberti Cattleman 44-40, 45 Colt/45 ACP, 357/38, Uberti Buckhorn 44-40, 44 Magnum, Marlin 1894CB in 44-40.

I have already made a bunch of videos so I will just post a link to my youtube page.

More to come

I need to learn so any constructive feedback is welcome.....even if it is to correct my horrible spelling.

Sounds like fun! However if you are testing "Old West" stuff there shouldn't be and 45ACP, 357 Mag or 44 Mag in there. (Or any jacketed bullets....)

"Old West" Revolvers and Rifles is the title of the topic. I am using Old West firearms...but modern calibers gives diversification. :-) I am not using Antique Old West Firearms although I do have a few.

Priority is 44-40, 45 Colt. I do not have a wide variety of old west calibers to shoot.....and is why I said Old West Revolvers and Rifles.

With that said, I will be testing
44-40 - revolver/rifle
45 Colt - revolver
45 ACP - revolver
44 Magnum - revolver
357 Magnum - revolver
38 Special - revolver

Revolvers are made by Uberti. They are of the Cattleman and Buckhorn model. Rifles will be an Uberti Winchester 73, Marlin 1894CB and I will even throw in a Marlin made in 1891 at some point.

My purpose is to view the ballistics capabilities fired thru these old design firearms although the firearms themselves are modern.

Sorry if I screwed up the title.

:D

I think you will find that the ballistics for a given load will be the same regardless of what it is fired in (modern design or old design) as long as the barrel length and cylinder gap are the same.

I would think testing good old plain lead projectiles would be more authentic

You guys are hard to please. Did you see my first photo?

Here are direct links to lead bullets

The Lyman 24299 HP came out about 1905. Just because the the date went past 1899 doesnt mean the old west suddenly went modern ;-)

Lyman 42798 was the original 1873 bullet design

TEST 3: Shot 4; 44-40, Ideal 42798, Pure Lead, Rifle - YouTube

Testing wouldn't last long if I stopped at original bullet designs

Now, testing lead bullets is fine but testing a bullet that is already more than likely to pass thru 32" of ballistics gel is almost a moot point.

That .44 Mag. smacking the blocks and lifting them off the bench in slow-motion is impressive. Good stuff.

"You guys are hard to please. Did you see my first photo?"

Didn't mean to be, by the title I thought it was a comparison of old time revolvers and how effective (or not ) they were.

I always wanted to play with ballistic gel.

How expensive is that stuff? I gather it 2 part and you mix it? Will it hold up in the heat down here in 94 F and equal humidity??

This stuff is synthetic. Climate will not affect it. After your done, melt and reform in the oven :-)
