Absent Comrade
My Daughter was something of a free spirit and left home shortly after
graduating highshool and went to Colorado. We subsidized her to some
extent but she got started in college and worked and attended long
enough to get her Master's Degree. Her typical life style at that
time included renting a house and acting as landlady, taking in other
girls on a share expense basis.
At one point she began getting phone calls from an unknown man. He
wasn't obscene but was very suggestive in trying to establish some
kind of relationship. This went on over several months with her
constantly rebuffing him and him becoming more insistent. He
obviously was stalking her because he made accurate comments about
the car she drove, even how she was dressed that day, etc.
One night when she was alone in the house, about nine o-clock, he
called again and said that this is the night he was coming to get her.
She is not an excitable type. She called the police and happened to
get a woman detective. After outlining the history of the case, she
said she wasn't really afraid because she had a .38 special and a
Doberman weighing 100 pounds that would obey her every command. The
detective commented that she seemed self sufficient and said that
although she wasn't allowed to offer advice, if it were her own
situation and the man should actually get into the house she wouldn't
allow him to get closer to her than ten feet away. Further all entry
wounds would be on the front and not get out of the house.
At this point I must back up a bit and mention that Daughter was no
stranger to guns and had her own .22 rifle for years. Some time
before the present event, I became concerned about her living as a
single woman in Denver. When she came to Ardmore I gave her the
.38 Smith and Wesson and took her out to get familiar with it. I
told her this was not to make her a target shooter. She was to shoot
double action, not cocking the pistol. She was to be able to hit a
pie plate every time at a distance of ten feet, rapid fire. That
afternoon she perforated a number of paper plates. ---- Now back
to the story ---
She had two girls staying with her at that time who knew of the
caller. They both came in around eleven oclock and were updated
on the evening event. They planned that if the caller came, one
would turn on the light and jerk the door open, the other would
hold the dog and Daughter would face the intruder with the gun.
About one oclock the door bell rang. They all took their positions
and went into action. There before them was a man in coveralls with
a little tool bag, looking in terror into a big nickel plated pistol
and a huge dog straining to take a piece out of him. He screamed
"Locksmith, Locksmith" as he put his hands up and dropped the bag.
It turned out that he was looking for an address in the same street.
Going home after a party, someone found they had locked up their keys
in the car. Later learned the address he was looking for was
occupied by four single men. It was surmised the locksmith related
to them his adventure at the house where those dangerous women lived.
She never had another call from the mystery suitor.
