Coast Gaurd left some odd projectiles on our range (pic)

The Coast Gaurd uses our range for training, after a session the last week I found some neat 40mm projectiles in the back stop, marked "CTG, 40MM PRACTICE, M781" Here's a pic:

Anyone have a use for them? They are inert, seem to have an aluminum base and a plastic nose. Any cartridge collectors out there that need a 40MM projectile?

Aren't hard projectiles for a 40mm considered DD's when assembled into a cartridge? Even "practice" stuff?

I think you're right, but I doubt the laws apply to our betters. I actually think the military, which the Coast Guard might be considered, should practice. I have nothing against them using HE, except it'd hard on the target stands!

If it was me, I'd leave them where I found them.

They are practice rounds, filled with orange chalk powder. They break open and leave a bright orange mark when impacting a hard surface. Those must have missed the target and landed on soft ground.

...or the fuse was bad; a dud round. In either case, I'd call the coastees to come pick them up.

In my Army days all training "munitions"-grenades, land mines, even the cases containing the "anti-nerve gas" kits were painted blue.

Yes, when I saw they were blue I knew they were inert, just a curiosity for someone like me who likes that sort of thing. In my time in the Navy, I saw a lot of things painted blue, like dummy mines, bombs, torpedoes and missiles hanging on Navy aircraft.

call the Coast Guard and let them decide if they are safe in that condition.

They're plastic containers of chalk. Cool keepsakes, but harmless.

My son just turned 12 today and is a beginning cartridge collector. He'd love to have one if possible.
