Do coke style grips seem more prone to chip away right behind the trigger guard than other target grips, seems like I've seen a lot of them that way.

I've noticed the same think. Don't know if it's just on cokes or because the wood is over fifty years old now. Maybe one of our grips experts knows.

My experience with the oversized targets found on the early 44 and 41 Magnums is that the weak points are where the wood is the thinest; the ears/horns, at the bottom of the backstrap where the two stock halves come together and the trigger guard filler/flange such as the ones shown here. Generally, someone who is an expert stock maker like Keith Brown can repair these with new old wood where the damage is almost undetectable.

Believe it or not, those can be repaired. DWFAN does outstanding work, you won't be able to tell where the break was. (Especially if you have the piece that broke off.

I don't believe I've ever seen a set that was on a used shooter that wasn't broken there. Like the man above said, weak link. They can be clearanced so it doesn't happen anymore.
