As some of you might know, I collected a lot of holsters. I also
have a fair amount of S&W revolvers, knives, belts, etc. etc.

Before I retired way back in 2000, I travelled quite a little bit,
so I kinda enjoyed collecting matchbooks. Here, on the left,
are a few samples. On the right is the rest of the story. The
gallon jug is packed to the brim.

My late brother traveled a lot and collected shot glasses. His friends and business associates knew this and would bring back or send shot glasses to him when they traveled.

When he died he had over 800. His widow still has them.

I used to collect swizzle sticks.
But I felt the need to cut back.
They’re gone.
I’m down to Guns, Knives, Hammers, Gun Books, Maps, Survival Equipment, Cook Books , Skillets, CDs, Movies and Coins.
A Man’s got to know his limitations !

My mom had the Franklin Mint set of plates. I think she sold of her Sterling Silver Christmas Tree ornaments. Every company that made silver tableware made them she had hundreds! She also had 808 of the 810 Royal Daulton "Toby" mugs. When she found the last two at a reasonable price the thrill of the hunt was over and sold the off.

She liked the look of a collection but never really had the collector's obsession! Both her sons have the obsession, which is why I hang out here!

Some of my High School friends collect ex-wives! My buddy that grew up around the corner has 3 American and 3 German exes (as of 2014) and was looking to grow his collection before the 50th Class reunion (2024).

I too used to pick up match books on any travels. I have only kept a few that that had meaning, like the one from Ridgecrest bowl, my uncles bowling alley in Ridgecrest CA. We visited on a road trip back in the day. Sadly this is a dying collection option. I can’t remember the last time I saw any place that had a bowl of matches at the cashier.

I miss American sometimes :(

I remember when you'd pull the handle on the vending machine for your favored pack of smokes and you'd get a book of matches with your cigs.

And, if you were especially cool, you could light your cigarette from the match book using only one hand while driving.

(Every now and then the entire matchbook would catch fire which made for some pretty lively entertainment. Especially if you dropped the flaming match book in your shotgunner's lap...)

I've drove may times back in the day using my only my knee to steer while rolling a special organic cigarette.

It's not an obsession but if I'm out on my bike and decide to pick up some take out Wendy's I always grab a few straws, even thou I never order anything to drink.

Never know when you might need a straw.

Or light your Zippo on your thigh with the Zippo double action move. Downward to open the cover, upward to strike.

My great-grandmother and great aunt had never left the county, but friends and relatives who did, would bring them back salt & pepper shakers. They wound up with hundreds, display cabinets full from all over the world.

Couldn't touch them, but spent hours as a child looking at them. Always wondered what happened to the shakers after they passed on.

Had to explain to my wife quite often that it is not hoarding but a primal need for abundance. Vintage tools, knives, ammo, holsters, gadgets of all kinds are just a few obsessions. Quite seriously though I have, since childhood, had an obsession to collect experiences. May sound strange but I will try about anything once. I have gone great distances and spent a fair amount of money just to do something different. Not the usual tourist stuff. From scrapping barnacles from ship hulls, to pouring concrete under water, working in the fire rescue department, hunting mountain goats above timberline to using copious amounts of explosives in my work, to name just a few, I do love the challenge of doing something new. My wife has often made the comment after seeing me do some of my own dental work with a Dremel tool and mirror early in our marriage, that I would take a beating with a rubber hose just to add that experience to my list of accomplishments.
