Colorado

I don`t know what we have now, more Califonians
or Mexican illegals.

Interesting comments from folks. I'll add mine. My family moved here in 1886.

Having grown up in rural Jefferson County, I understand the idea that Colorado Springs is different. Been there, done that. My family very rarely ever comes to visit. Folks in Denver think that Colorado Springs has the market cornered on far right views just like many folks in Colorado Springs think that anything North of Monument is as left leaning as the elected officials in Colorado. I know that the DNC in Denver in August only helped to cement that opinion.

I remember when the SDS (students for a democratic society) were marching and Boulder PD was launching tear gas on students. The Bank of Boulder used to pay interest on a CD (certificate of deposit, not the music thing) by offering a Weatherby rifle or shotgun. Things have changed. Summit County (the areas previously known as Frisco and Dillon) were quiet small town Colorado. I grew up fishing in that area. My Great Aunt and Uncle owned a grocery store that is at the bottom of Dillon Reservoir. The Fraser River over in Grand County used to have the best fishing around. President Eisenhower used to fish there. Now it's full of condos and paved bike paths. I was cussed out for killing fish by a mountain biker. Do I hold all Texans and Californians accountable for the few that are rude and obnoxious? No.

Yes Colorado Springs has a lot of military. News flash folks, so does Denver. Ever heard of Buckley out in Aurora?

The Air Force Academy doesn't really make much noise around town. The cadets stay on base most of the time. The Army at Ft Carson has a big impact in the southern end of town and Peterson AFB is in the middle, on the east edge. The majority of military at Peterson are older, so there are not a lot of junior military in town. Nothing like San Diego.

I would recommend that if you are moving to Colorado, find a job first. Then move to that city.

No, I don't like to hear how wonderful California is. My guess is that if California is so wonderful you would not be moving. If everything is bigger and better in Texas, why are there so many Texans in Colorado? Ever seen a Texas deer compared to a Rocky Mountain mule deer or an elk?

Colorado has some nice gun laws. Open carry is legal. While it is legal, it may not be a really good idea in any town or city. There are still a lot of folks who get very scared at the sight of a gun. I don't open carry in Colorado Springs and would NEVER open carry in the Denver metro area. A CCW Permit is obtainable from the county sheriff in the county you live in. Sorry but I don't know how long you must live here to get a permit. Check the residency requirement. That was never an issue for me.

Bottom line is that every person is different and should be evaluated on their own merits, not based on where they live. My brother is as liberal as can be but I am not. We were both raised the same, in a rural Jefferson County home.

The environment on the front range is different than the western slope or the central mountain area. Park County has different issues from those folks in Grand County. Even folks in Fairplay have different views than those just 30-45 minutes away in Buena Vista or Summit County. How you are treated just depends on your personal views and how you treat people.

Opinions and politics in Colorado are varied just as they are in Northern and Southern California.

Interesting to hear all the info. Also interesting to hear how my fellow Californians can be tools.

I'm not too wild about CA, I was born and raised here and there was a time it was fantastic. But I lived in New Mexico for awhile and really appreceiated the seasons, and the open space. My wife and I both love to camp, love open space, and are sick of all the pretentsion in Cali. Sure I'll miss the beach but I expect to gain more.

We are planning on moving and renting for a year, just to feel things out.

Thanks to everyone for all the good info.

Well, here's my .02.

I moved to Colorado in 1976 because I did not want my children growing up in New Jersey. Colorado was a wonderful place to raise my kids - one arrived here at 6 months old and the other is a native.

No, it's not perfect and I truly dislike the growth that's occured since I got here, but as a transplant myself, it's hard to complain, eh?

None of my family lives here any more, just me. I've been retired for over four years and I thought about moving, but I love Colorado and I think I always will. I just can't imagine living anywhere else.

Gun laws (except in Denver) are pretty good. Personally, I don't like Colorado Springs very much, but I don't have a good reason. I find it can be a tough town to get around in, but that's personal preference.

You've got good advice... change your plates and don't brag on California. There is (and has always been since I've been here) a prejudice against Californians. Not individuals of course, but the idea that they come here and immediately want to "californicate" the place. In my own experience, there's some truth to it too.

That said, I arrived here with a very NJ accent and I traveled the whole state - urban and rural - and I don't remember even a single incident when a real Coloradan ever judged me for it. These are good, decent, accepting people and one of the best decisions of my life was to raise my kids and live my life among them.

I transplanted to Montrose, Co (about 240 mi west of CS) for about 4 years in the 1990's. Absolutely loved the area and the people (Western Slope weather is fantastic). Back then, Californians were blamed for a meteoric rise in real estate values, but I don't believe they faced any animosity. I often open-carried a handgun while out fishing, etc, and absent-mindedly left it in the holster while stopping at stores or gas stations on the way home...never caused any excitement back then.

I lived and worked in about 8 states before I ended up doing my 35 year career in california. When I retired we moved here to utah four years ago. I didnt like the politics and congestion, also I didnt like the ungodly heat of the mojave dessert where I lived.
BUT I am sick of hearing california bashing! #1, I knew very few californians that was born there.
#2, Most of california bares nothing in common to all the movies you watch. Not everybody lives in LA or san francisco! It is one huge state with a jillion miles of dessert, mountains and rual areas.
#3, We cant understand how Obama won. Well, californias politics are the same theory. You have all the nuts in frisco and LA vote in the politicans, and control the other 99 percent of the state! We were talking to a girl friend here the other day that was amazed that we were republicans. She thought everone from california was democrat! I informed her I knew very few people that were democrat! That is because our circle of friends were my type and party. From my perspective when I lived there, I could hardly understand how the democrats ever got in.
Look 95% of all movies you see are filmed around LA. I daily reconise the locations. LA isnt 1% of california! Not everybody there is a spoiled movie star, although I knew a few.
I am a right wing salty guy myself, but I think the strongest form of prejudice and biggitry going is this stupidity of judgeing somebody by their license plate!

...nothing wrong with California except for the POLITICS...I go there every other year for vacation...

...nothing wrong with Californians moving to Colorado...except for their POLITICS...odds are better than even that they lean to the left...

.

Odds are 75 percent of the weirdos and homosexials in the united states end up in san francisco. They are sure to vote for the likes of polosi, other sheep dont even vote. That few is how we end up with the likes of her and others like her.
I knew far more right wing people in california than I have met here in utah. The voteing results have NEVER jibbed with the people I knew or associated with there. It really is a case of a couple big citys that set the tone for the state that is 10,000 times larger. Remember that the whites are the minority in california, especialy in Los Angeles county.
