Coloring problems

I have been cleaning my guns with SLIP 2000 as it is supposed to be safe for all metals.

I have noticed that the nice dark blue color of several of my blued guns are now streaking with multi color hues in certain light. Have I ruined the finish of these guns or is there something I can do to bring back the nice deep blue without the hues?

It sounds like the refraction of light on an oil film. Did you try wiping the gun dry to see if the colors are still there? John

Over oiling is certainly a possibility. I did kind of go overboard with the amount of the cleaning liquid I used as well as cleaned them more often that I probably should. I did try wiping the gun dry, but that didn't work. So I cleaned it again. The colors weren't there yesterday, but today they are back and in more places. I tried wiping the guns dry again, and no change.

I would try a good degreaser in a small area that the streaking is showing up in and see if it's an oily film and not something that has attacked the blued steel. IF the streaking goes away after the degreasing you know it's an oily film on the steel.

Not trying to be a smartazz,but I see that you have been here for over two years now. In that time,I've probably seen at least 2 dozen threads asking about "what to use to clean my gun?" My memory ain't all that great anymore,but I can't recall anyone answering those queries with "Get you some SLIP 2000!" I've never heard of it. What led you to use that versus,say BreakFree CLP or one of the other oft-recommended products frequently mentioned on this forum?

The best thing to use on your revolver after a good cleaning and wipe down is wax and the two best ones are Johnsons Floor wax and Renaissance wax. They have a neutral PH and seal the surface to prevent oxidation. Renaissance wax is expensive but a 200 ml can will last you years and this is what museums use on their guns and lots of other things that they have on display.

I have had that stuff for a while now. I used CLP in the past, and then picked some of this stuff up as some other people recommended it. I am just about out of it so will likely go back to CLP or one of the other recommended items here with my next purchase.

It says safe to use for all metals and metal parts. Doesn't mention anything about finishes. I am really hoping it is just an excess amount which needs to be removed.
