Found this for sale in the local classified. Not my style but I'm in awe of the expertise and workmanship that goes into what was once a $1000 msrp gun. $5000 of labor???

Colt Government Model 1911 Custom Ted Yost Heirloom Precision

Wish I could afford it and appreciated exactly what it is.

Addendum: Just called and the 1911 was shipped out today. Dang it!

Expensive, you bet. But you get hours upon hours of hand fitting of parts along with an attention to detail that is unsurpassed. I have a Delta Elite that has been worked over by Ted Yost. It is my daily carry. I have no doubt it is one the most reliable 1911s out there. It never FTF, stovepipes or malfunctions in any way. The fit of the parts is unmatched.

When he had the gun it took an extra 3 months to get a second barrel because he did not like the way the first one fit. He said it would work, but it wasn't up to his standards. He was also able to do the little things I wanted, like grinding down the beavertail so it isn't so big and also grind the bumps off of the grip safety so it is smooth. All of the takes time, some things more time than others.

If you ever want to have a 1911 that is by far the cream of the crop Ted is one of the very few gunsmiths I would look into using.

I am glad I took the plunge when I could afford it because that will probably be my one and only high end custom work gun.

It isn't this pretty anymore, a few years of daily carry will take care of that, but it functions just as good as the day I got it back.

There is a difference in price between taking a used off the shelf handgun into custom territory, and buying a purpose built custom 1911. I have several excellent 1911's, and wince every time I here someone say "I had a 1911, they are a ***". Then you ask them what they had, and it's like "A Norinco", "A Springfield V10". Well, I have a 1914 USGI model that shoots nice, and several up-scale 1911's that I would be happy to die with experiencing nothing else.
