I've heard about Smolts and Smythons for years but have never seen one. Is it as simple as screwing the Python barrel into the K frame receiver or is the gunsmithing more involved than that. For example, are the barrel threads the same size and pitch? I know a crane lock is used but how complex is it really?

I never recall a Python barrel on a K-frame; I always thought the threads were opposite. However, I do remember seeing a Python barrel on a Ruger Security Six.

I just had Alex Hamilton of Ten-Ring Precision in San Antonio put a 6 inch Python barrel on a S&W 19-3. The threads are different with the Colt thread being about .010 larger dianeter. I had a local gunsmith/tool & die maker look at the job but he passed. Alex said no problem, he has done several. The rib on the Python barrel is a little taller than the S&W frame so he had to machine a 45 degree bevel on it to match them up. If you use a "L" frame they match up with no difference in height. He installed a double crane lock (2 locking balls) and it looks GREAT! I am ready now to send it off to Fords Refinishing to have their "master blue" applied to it. I furnished the Python barrel and Alex charged me $270 total for the job.
This may be more than you wanted to know but I am very excited about this project.

This is a popular conversion for people shooting bullseye events. The faster twist of the Colt barrels compared to S&W helps stablize WC'ers better at the long line (50 yard). Clark offers faster twist barrels for the K frame S&W and I'm sure others do also.

mmande, that is exactly the information I wanted to know. Very helpful. How long did Ten-Ring take to do the job?
