Hey guys A friend of mine has a colt Python with a bushnell scope mounted on it (unfortunately)... Can anyone identify this mount? Is this a no drill type mount or would the gun normally be drilled for this type of mount??! Thanks for any information you can provide.

I had one of these mounts on a Ruger .22 revolver back in the early 1960's. As I remember it was spring steel and kind of a primitive and not very solid mount. With Pythons in the price range they are today, I would be reluctant to put any mount on them that could possibly mark the finish and reduce the value of the gun and this mount can do that because it relies on friction to keep it in place. I saw a mount that clamps on a Python vent rib at a recent gun show. I would think that would also leave marks and I would not use it on a very clean gun.

My Python was a hunting rig with the same bushnell scope as you have mounted on it. However, the mount that was on my gun did require the top strap to be drilled and tapped. The mount on your Python is different from mine. So I do not know how it attaches.

As others have said, it looks like a Bushnell Phantom base. It was simply a piece of spring steel that was shaped to wrap around the top strap of a revolver. Tightening down the scope mount screws was supposed to draw it tightly together. It was appealing because no drilling or tapping was required.

A friend bought a Model 14 with one of these scopes/mounts on it. The revolver/scope combination didn't seem to hold zero for more than a few shots. When he took it off (carefully) there was some blue loss on the edges of the top strap. Couldn't be sure if the blue damage came from the previous owner's initial installation or from shooting.
