The Colt R6001 carbine is the 16" barrel version of the R6000 Rifle with all the A1 features. The major difference, besides barrel length is the round hand guard Vs triangle. Also shown is the R6420 carbine which is an odd combination of A1 and A2 features. The 6001 has the early 2 position stock where as the 6420 has the slightly later 2 position stock and A2 pistol grip. Both have the straight hand guard retainer. By the time of the 6420 Colt added the forward assist, this one having the early tear drop. Also the earlier gun has the open bottom flash hider and the 6420 has the closed bottom compensator. One other major difference between the 6001 and 6420 is the later has a 1/7 twist rate.
The one on top has been fired very little, while the R6001 appears to be unfired outside the factory, with minor handling marks.
There is life outside S&W collecting. One that I am on the look out for fell between the two, the Sporter II, R6401.
