Are the smooth Combat Grips smaller than the Target Grips that have the diamond checkering? I thought the two were the same size only difference was the checkering design.

They are completely different, and various dimensions are considerably different. In general they are "standard size" for the frame size they are made for, but they fit the user's hand much differently.

What is the football recess area on the left side on the Combat Grips for? I've heard it referred to as a thumb rest and I think it was mentioned it was not originally there and was added later on for the extractor or a speed loader. Which one of thrse would be correct?

The relieved area on the left stock panel was to ease extraction of empty cases. The complete cutout on the left panel was to facilitate the use of speed loaders.

Ok thanks for that. Another question for yoy, do any of the Combat Grips come with the compete cutout on the left grip or do they all have just the football relieved area?

Nearly all factory combat stocks have the speedloader cutout. A rare few with the football recess exist.

Edit to add: The above is the case regarding K and N-frames. J-frame combat stocks feature small footballs.

Can someone please post some pictures of a Combat stock sixth the speed loader cutout. All the Combats I've seen have the football recess. You would think it would be the other way around seeing how the ones with the football ones are more rare.

Are the Combat grips more desirable than Target grips, if so why?
