I picked this up at a pawn shop a couple of months ago and have been meaning to post the pics. Now that the holidays are over.....and it's not raining.....I had time to take a couple.

This 4 screw Combat Magnum is in the low K 263000 range and shipped in January 1957. I spotted the diamond targets as soon as I walked in the door. The gun is outstanding...except for what looks like a small cold blue repair just in front of the trigger guard on the frame and visable in the 1st picture. Stocks are nice but have a couple of very minor handling scratches.
Haven't shot it yet...but I expect it will be amazing.
Enjoy....
Craig

May I ask what you paid for it? Pawn shops in my area tend to want high numbers for S&W revolvers.

I believe your gun is from the first batch of 5000 made. I'm not sure I would shoot it and increase the cylinder ring.

I read in the SCSW the Combat Magnum started at 260001 which would put this one just a little over the first 3000.

I've been trying to find out how many shipped each year of the first couple of years but haven't found the info yet.

That's normally the case around here as well. I have about 6 pawn shops in the area that I try and check regularly. I've purchased from all of them at one time or another and I can usually work a decent deal.....unless the gun is one that they absolutely know they can sell for top dollar or even higher in some cases;i.e. Mod 29 or Mod 27. I also purchased a nice Pre 18 from this same shop last year. I find that in a lot of cases, they have problems accurately identifying a non model marked gun.

Beautiful. It doesn't get any better than a K frame .357 Magnum.

A buddy of mine has one just like this. In similar condition to the original post - see picture below (but my picture taking ability is not so good). Where I know where to look, is the SN under the grips? Thanks

Yes take the grips off and look on the bottom of the butt.

Very nice, dnonac!
The Combat Magnum is a wonderful revolver, and one from the 1950s produced before the model number era is an especially sweet find. Yours is in great condition - that one little blue flaw would not have stopped me from picking this one up.
Congratulations. I like this a lot!

Nice find! As Bamabiker mentioned, remove the grips and look on the butt. You might also find the number inside the ejector shroud, on the face of the cylinder and underneath the extractor star.

I think your spell-checker has an overactive imagination! :)

If your gun has an S prefix serial number, it is an N frame, but there aren't enough digits after the letter for it to be an S & W gun. If you meant K2950x that also doesn't have enough digits to be a .357?

Pre 19

Sorry Murph I took # of of crane butt # is K26461x , On crane has a large S & on left grip there is a S and a#3 . Thanks for help

It's an early one also, probably shipped in 1956. I'd guess the other stampings are inspector's or fitter's marks.

By history the Combat Magnum was developed at the request of Bill Jordan, although I don't think he was involved in its design, just floated the concept of a K frame .357.
