What grips would you recommend to reduce the battering and impact on the hands and wrist?

Hogues are fine but I like wood. What about Jordan Troopers? Are they still sold?

Personally, I don't think asthetics is in order for a range day with a .44 mag so I use recoil reduction Pachs. But ocassionally I shoot with standard N-frame targets. On those occassions, I wear a gel shooting glove. S&W brand I think.

All my 44 revolvers wear Herrett's Jordan Troopers and they still make them the same way, one at a time custom fit to your hand size.
I tried all the other rubber grips first and then discovered the JT and never looked further.
If your gun is a round butt N frame then the Hogue X frame grip that S&W sells is also really good for recoil.

I think Kim Ahrends can help you....His grips are first rate and beautiful to boot. Lynnie is correct, the JT are good, but just don't fit ME. Her suggestion of the Hogue X is terrific.

I have been battling this same dilema for decades. I like the feel and looks of wood grips, but with .44s and .45s, they just beat my hand terrible. I gave up on using my Jordan Troopers on a .44 Mag and put them on a 627-0. Just ordered 2 sets of the X-frame rubber grips last night. I have Pachmayer Decelerators for N fames and they are ugly and don't feel quite right, but they do cushion the impact on the hand very well. I have handled the X-frame guns in gun store, and the grips on those, called "Model 500 Impact Absorbing Hogue Square Butt Conversion Grips" Feel better than the Decelerators, and have more cushion on the backstrap too. I sure hope they are the answer to the problem.

Here is my 6" 629-6 with the X-frame Hogues, the .460/.500 Magnum grips only available from S&W Accessories ($35). They add maybe 3/16" to the trigger pull length - fine for my medium sized hands. Certainly tolerable when you consider the recoil absorption afforded by that padded backstrap. Shoot .44 Specials, and some Ahrends are fine - and look great.

PS They also fit K/L frames - for a bit of absurdity... no longer a pocket gun, however!

Everyone's hands are different. I have small hands and my full size carry gun is a 629-1 with a 5" full underlug barrel. I use Altamont grips. They're the same magna-style grips that S&W is putting on the new registered magnum/really a model 27/8 shot whatchamacallit thing. They work fine for me because I have a ported full underlug barrel and practice regularly with mid power loads then finish up with a couple cylinders of hot stuff. It doesn't exactly tickle, but I can do accurate rapid fire double action strings with full power ammo, just not all day long.
