On Sunday I watched the 3 part series of Commanche Moon which is the prequill to Lonesome Dove.

My question is this....Did the actors playing Gus and Woodrow in this series study with Robert Duval and Tommy Lee Jones for their very unique vocal delivery and body language?

They did a very good job in mimicking their elders if they did not study with them.

Growr, I partially agree with ya. Steve Zahn absolutely nailed Gus. Body language, hand gestures and phrasing. The writers also nailed the dialog that sounded exactly like what Duval's version of the character would have said.

On a side note, David Arquette did a great job of carrying on the roll of Gus as created by Duval in the other Prequal "Dead Mans Walk". Very very good but Zahn's performance was even better.

But I saw Carl Urbans version of Woodrow as totally missing the boat. Jones' version of Woodrow was short tempered, surly and stubborn...but sure of himself and loyal to Gus in his own way. Urban just seemed to me like a petulant child. Unsure of and not understanding anything going on around him and not much more than a whining simp. Had me squirming in my chair. I don't think he ever ever saw the Tommy Lee Jones version let alone studied him.

I find that strange too because I've seen him in other movies and he was just fine. I can not account for his interpretation of Woodrow Call.

But in the last one Streets Of Laredo James Garner did a super fine job of playing an older Woodrow as I imagined Jones might have done it. He sure showed that mean ol' sheriff what for about "rude behavior".
