My Dad carried a pistol that looked like a picture of a 38 Hand Ejector I saw in a post. Would that have been a duty pistol in the mid to late 1950's? The barrel and front sight look right and his was a fixed sight model. Any ideas? Any pictures?

I think the M&P/M10 was likely THE most common Police revolver around in that era. NYPD alone had about 30,000 at the time I'll bet. Maybe a few Colt OP's.

Well this is a gussied up '55 M&P in nickle. Don't know if it helps.

That's the one! I remember the Diamond grip panels. Damn, I have to find one.
Thanks a bunch. He could be a tough SOB but thinking about those days just make me smile now.

Those stocks hit me funny too but not because of the emblems. On that gun I would expect to see a higher and sharper shoulder, square bottom(not PC cut) and the checkered area corners to be more rounded. However, I don't focus on these guns so maybe I just haven't noticed before.

Do they number to the gun?

Bob, 1952-53 was about the time frame the stocks changed. The plastic emblems lasted about a year or so.

I pulled this one back out of the safe...ser no is C 241846. Rt grip is numbered to the gun.

If you wanna see a perfect example of the weapons used by the police back in the 50's, watch L.A. Confidential. It's one of my very favorite movies and there are Tommy Guns, Colt Detective Specials, 1911s and Smith & Wesson model 10s galore! It also has an all-star cast...Russell Crowe, Kim Bassinger, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito...just to name a few.

I know when my Dad joined the NYPD in 65 he had his choice between a Smith or the OP he chose. His official off duty (issued) piece was a Detect Special.

And......[drum roll, and nod in the general direction of Saxon Pig]......with a .358 158gr at over 950 fps in older loadings, not too shabby ballistics.

Cheers,

Dyson
