The Glock 29 has been around for years.
The recoil of heavy 10mm loads and that grip safety are going to be rough on the web of a shooter’s hand. Why anyone needs an optic on a Get Off Me gun is beyond my comprehension.

Gotta agree on both points. 10mm Auto, in full power form, is no ***** cat. In my experience, it is very much like a 357 Magnum handgun. As for optics on a defensive pistol, I just shake my head. In a defensive situation, you probably won't even notice the pistol has sights of any sort.

I have a Government model and a custom all steel CCO configured 1911 style pistol in 10 mm.
I carried them on the ranch for 20 years.
I used pretty warm reloads with 180 grain bullets.
While not unpleasant to shoot, the CCO does buck and snort a little bit.
I never even considered a Glock 29 mainly because of it’s shape and size among other things.
I won’t be looking at this new gun either.

Me either. 10 requires some barrel to reach full power. Just another gimmick gun............in plastic.

I’ll stick with my G29. For its intended use I personally don’t need an optic or a match grade barrel.

It's interesting how 10mm keeps getting more popular as .40S&W loses ground. I wouldn't be surprised if more new 10mm guns are sold than .40s right now.
It would also be interesting to know how many new 10mm owners are using light loads in their compact 10mm pistols. You know, something in the .40 S&W range...

My guess at this point is that Smith & Wesson would rather stick with their own proprietary 10mm cartridge (.40 S&W) than make firearms chambered in 10mm Auto.
Personally, for lack of a 10mm Auto Pistol that I liked, I skipped the cartridge altogether and went a step further with .45 Super, which has performance on par with full-power 10mm Auto with a bigger, heavier bullet.
I always like the H&K USP, and it can handle .45 Super right out of the box with no modifications necessary, so that was my alternative to a M&P10mm.
Frankly, I think that anyone who still wants a 10mm Auto Pistol should just choose from one of the available options or seek an alternative like I did, because Smith & Wesson just doesn't seem interested in making firearms chambered in that cartridge.
A lot of 10mm Auto shooters choose FBI Loads, (180grs @ 1000fps) most of whom are seemingly unaware that they're shooting given how often you'll see folks bragging about their "Powerful 10mm Auto Pistol" which is then shown off in a picture with boxes of ammo in the shot with clearly visible stats.

My two 10's are a RIA 1911 and a Smif 1006....100% of all my loads are full 10mm horsepower.........If I want to shoot a 40 I got those too.
I'll also stick with my G29. Definitely snappy with full power loads, but I like the flexibility of using 15 rd G20 mags - and Glock mags and parts are cheap, plentiful and reliable. Basically a chubby M19.

The only Glock I've ever shot that I would consider buying is the G29. I shot it with Magtech JHP ammo (that's all the range had) rated at 1230 fps and 605 ft/lbs. That's way stronger than any .40 cal. ammo I've ever shot, and 100 ft/lbs greater than my EDC .357 SIG rounds. Thus the recoil was stout, but so am I, so I found it manageable. If I decide to go 10mm, it looks I'll have to head over to the dark side.

The better question is WTH does a small 10mm self defense gun get you? Most of the 10mm ammo is washed down to 40 range anyway. And from the probable distances this type of gun will be used for, you gain practically nothing over any of the more common calibers. I've owned 10mms so I'm not a hater, but unless you are hell bent to hunt with a semi auto pistol the 10 offers very little. There are much better hunting calibers in the revolver platform and much more available carry calibers that are either cheaper, more available or have less recoil that will serve just as well in a defensive role...
Looks like an interesting platform, but I don’t chose to patronize Springfield Armory.
10mm is an awesome round. I’ve had a G29 for over a dozen years, and the gun is an impressive little package, although a little ‘thick’ when carrying. I prefer 9mm compacts because they conceal better. Don’t know why Springfield has this nice compact 10mm and then mounts a big optic on top. At that point, why not just have a larger frame that will be easier to shoot, and hold more rounds...? I don’t care for top mounted optics on a carry gun.
And yes, short barrel always loses some bullet velocity, no matter what gun, but my G29 is still a cannon. The 10mm round will still have plenty of gas in the tank, no matter what barrel size... I’m sure this new Springfield is the same.
I don’t find 10mm difficult to shoot, at all, and much prefer it to the snappy .40 S&W (had one, sold it...). And yes, I carry full power Underwood ammo, and reload ammo to match for my practice rounds. I honestly don’t understand people that think it’s “too much.” In larger platform guns, I find it quite enjoyable to shoot. Everyone experiences things differently, but I find the 10mm recoil to be more of a strong push/lift impulse, rather than a ‘snappy’ /sharp recoil. More like a stronger .45acp.
In 10mm I’ve got the G29, G20 (awesome gun!), Colt Delta, and RI double stack 1911. That all steel double stack 10mm 1911 is super fun to shoot, and is a great gun. The G20 is also very fun to shoot with full power 10mm ammo, and an overall nice platform. I’d like to locate a nice Sig 226 in 10mm, and regret not buying one when they came out with them...

I look at a compact 10mm auto the same way that I look at a Commander sized .38 Super.
The 10mm needs a longer barrel to reach its potential. Don't want a longer barrel ? There are plenty of choices in compact guns in .40 S&W that should give you about the same ballistics.
Same with the .38 Super. If you want a Commander sized pistol you might as well just go with one chambered in 9mm Parabellum.
Of course I may be wrong on the ballistics but my gut feeling is to stay away from compacts in the smaller caliber, high velocity rounds.
